Its hard to believe they'll get rid of offices. It just doesn't seem realistic to think it can work right without chance, informal interactions. And how is anybody supposed to suck up and badmouth rivals if they never encounter the boss by the coffee machine?

I am SO grateful to have neither a TV nor a Twitter account.
I can think freely without retweeting! Yaaay!

4

Dori Monson is an evil asshole and I hope he is gone for good.

5

I remember when Dori was just starting out. In those days her show was about things like cooking, housekeeping and glamour. Like so many weak-minded people, It was Reagan that changed her.....

7

So no one at the Stranger is going to highlight the local angle on the NOLA altar threesome story?!? Where is your regional pride?

Shortening the work week: yes, let’s start that now. The traditional “40 hour” workweek is completely arbitrary. There’s no reason it shouldn’t be 35 or 32 or 30 or whatever. We have more people than jobs. This trend will get exponentially worse with the evolution of AI and automated tech. We need to start to restructure the economy now. However, we won’t, just like we haven’t done anything about modernizing our form of government, just like we’ve done barely anything about climate change, just like we never deal with problems until they are too late. We’re fucking idiots.

Dori Monson: yes, he’s a dumbfuck. And I hope he gets fired for being a dumbfuck. But specifically to the transgender issue, I think he should be forced to sit down with some representatives of the transgender community and spend his entire show in discussion, where he can ask questions, but mainly listen. On-air sensitivity training.

Tommy Le: Police lie, they plant evidence, they misreport, they kill people without justice. Yes, we need to “defund” the police. But we do need the police. As with most issues, the police issues that we regularly discuss are symptoms, not the underlying problem. We need to restructure the entire criminal justice system (starting first with the drug laws). We need to overhaul the legal system. We need to restructure our health system. We need to restructure our education system. We need to restructure the economy. And until we start to address the systemic issues of why we need the police in the first place, it will be impossible to fix the police. We’re a shit-show, and you’re delusional if you think it’s not just going to get worse and worse unless we do something.

Twitter: completely confused on JK’s take… are we supposed to blame the people or the platform? Is this another “cars” thing where social media platforms are evil, and because we’re fucking idiots, we’re not allowed to have such things?

Presidential Debates: they were stupid even before Trump. They are super stupid with Trump. Hope they’re all cancelled.

11

"There’s no reason it shouldn’t be 35 or 32 or 30 or whatever." Sure, so why not 40.

There are hundreds of thousands of job in the future. There's no reason to think that AI and advanced technologies we don't have yet will be involved in creating them.

Sigh, the unmotivated and the unimaginative. They're the f##cking idiots.

The movement to allow for a more flexible work schedule will be a boon for workers whose lives are improved by not having to commute everyday but it will hamper the ability of the city to recover as less people in the office on a daily basis mean less sales tax revenue from supporting business. Combined with the likelihood of continued depression in tourism and convention business the next couple of years are going to present some tough revenue challenges for the city.

18

The number of hours really only matters if you are hourly; which, then why would you want less hours?
Salaried employees can work more or less than 40 hours in a week depending on work-load and if they are proficient in their skills.
Maybe a better approach would be to give people, especially hourly employees, three days off in a row instead of MAYBE getting two. Probably two of the worst things about hourly work are the inconsistent schedules and that you often times don't get a "weekend", or if you do manage two days in a row off they are in the middle of the week when ain't shit going on.
I'd bet many salaried workers would work 10+ hour days if it guaranteed an extra day off every week.

Oh kristofarian - always quick to chime in with your infamous imbecility.

31

@29 -- touche douche!

32

MrB dear, Dori wasn't "gagged". He was suspended by his employers for speaking out in a way that they don't agree with. That policy is almost universal across the working world, especially when one has a prominent, public-facing job like he does.

He has free speech. He is paying the consequences for what he chose to day. Not by the government, but by the private sector. He's not a victim.

33

@19 -- Not much of a sports fan, I guess. Anyway, the NBA is more popular than ever. The WNBA goes up and down in popularity, but has always been popular locally. They would have been extremely popular this year without a pandemic (people love winners, and going to playoff games). Then you have the Bird/Rapinoe angle -- it all adds up to lots of butts in the seats, as they say. Or it would have, if there wasn't a pandemic.

The bubble was a huge success. No one inside the bubble got the disease. That is much better than other sports (baseball and football have had mini-epidemics). Of course revenue is off -- no one attends any games (duh) -- but overall, it was a huge success because they pulled it off while maintaining an amazing record of safety.

I'm also glad there is at least one more game. As much as I like LeBron James, it is fun to watch the Heat challenge them.

That being said, I was thrilled to see the Storm dominate during the playoffs. Sue Bird got her fourth WNBA championship at age 39 (and should have been the playoff MVP in my opinion). Fuck Yes.

34

Isn’t Dori a girl’s name?

35

Dori's 'not a victim'*?!

it'd be heartbreaking if word of this
got out to his disciples of the AM dial.

*def a victim of his own arrogance

36

@30 -- Oh give me a fucking break. Dori didn't explore the topic of sex versus gender identity. Nor did he discuss the biology of sex (which, by the way is a bit more complicated than you think -- https://www.newstatesman.com/future-proof/2015/02/sex-isn-t-chromosomes-story-century-misconceptions-about-x-y).

He wrote an insulting message because he is a dick. KIRO knew he was a dick when they hired him, but they just assumed he would not act like a dick for a while. He did, so he is fired.

40

@11 raindrop, "Sigh, the unmotivated and the unimaginative. They're the f##cking idiots."

As Kristofarian often correctly points out, you project. You’re unmotivated to learn anything, and unimaginative in every sense of the word aside from how you view yourself (daily illusions of grandeur on display).

“The are hundreds of thousands of job[s] in the future”… you are aware that we’re quickly approaching 8 billion people on this planet, right? Well over 300 million in the US alone. Yes, “hundreds of thousands of jobs in the future” will save us.

Conservatives such as yourself have little ability/willingness to see 5 steps ahead of what is now. The “future” is just some scary abstract thing that involves “change”, and conservatives inherently dislike change - they want the status quo (which eventually leads to desiring a return to the status quo, and eventually devolves in the pursuit of a white, puritan, patriarchal world), particularly when it favors themselves. All about ME and NOW.

For the foreseeable future, there will be jobs necessary to be performed by humans, even if it’s just to create, program, and service the machines. The problem is there will be a lot less jobs overall being necessary. Hundreds of millions of jobs will be wiped out over the next century, and there will simply not be enough high-compensation jobs to replace them. The wealth disparity in both this country and the world will continue to grow, and our societies will continue to devolve into something akin to medieval feudalism, with an elite ruling class and a poor peasant class. If we continue with our current political system, along with national and global economic systems, and population growth, this is inevitable.

Like monetary currency itself, work hours and pay have become largely abstract and disconnected concepts in our modern world. We just keep them in place because “that’s the way things are.” There was a time when everyone had to work in order to provide for their communities. We passed the point of necessity some time ago, and it is quickly accelerating. We already could easily provide food and shelter and modern conveniences to every human being on the planet with just a small fraction of the population and resources we use, if we chose to do so. So why should only a small fraction of the population have to work to provide for everyone else? Well, they don’t - we could spread that same work out over a larger population. So rather than a small portion of the overall population working a lot of hours, a larger portion of the population could work fewer hours. Hence, 40 hours becomes 30 hours becomes 20 hours. Compensation doesn’t have to change, just the way we think about progress does.

p.s. what’s the point in censoring “f##cking”? What kind of conflicted mess of purity are you harboring between your ears? Please seek help.

42

@38 -- gay marriage is not quite 'retired,' blip.

@46: I suggest you simply accept my politics that I will vote for Biden to get Trump out but I remain a Republican.

48

@30 MrB, “Here's my problem with where we're at with the transgender question: the idea you can be whatever you 'identify' as… But there are legitimate questions to be answered. Are you REALLY what you identify as?"

The problem with trying to have these conversations with people such as yourself, is that you’re more intent on maintaining your “belief” system than being remotely interested in learning anything.

You needed to become “convinced” about gay people. Now you need to be “convinced” about transgender people. You can’t take any of the lessons you learned from your previous ignorance and eventual grudging acceptance, and apply it to similar situations.

So, why did you need to be “convinced" about gay people? What was the “problem” before you became “convinced”? Why did it matter to you whether gay people are “created” or “made”? Let’s say for a moment that gay people were not born gay but simply chose to be gay? Why would that be a problem for you?

The way people such as yourself frame these issues is that there’s a “problem” to begin with. Whether transgender people are born as transgender/gay, or choose to become transgender/gay is actually a moot point, a debate that LGBTQ people (understandably) too often get drawn into. Whether a person chooses to identify as a gender and sex that does not align with their born genitalia is of no concern to you. It’s not a “problem” to anyone other than those that want to make it a “problem".

You have to make up “problems" like “bathrooms” or “sports” to rationalize your transphobic feelings. That you’re still talking about “bathrooms” is indicative of your true nature. Because if you actually wanted to understand this, you would have read or watched one of a THOUSAND articles and videos that have explained why “bathrooms” are not actually a “problem”.

The question of competitive “sports” in the transgender community and society at large is a legitimate issue that hasn’t been resolved. From what I’ve read and seen, there are just as many in the transgender community who also question the fairness and safety of transgender athletes competing. But it’s a similar issue to whether an athlete without legs should be allowed to use prosthetics in competition. You don’t start with the notion of “convince me that people without legs should have the same rights and respect as other human beings”. Fairness in competitive sports is an age-old issue, and transgenderism just brings a new angle to it. “Sports” (and unfortunately the courts) will have to figure it out.

JK Rowling is not raising legitimate questions. That’s the fucking problem. Like you, she poses her transphobia in the form of insincere questions. Like you, she has plenty of resources to educate herself on the topic, she just doesn’t want to accept the answers because they doesn’t fit with her internal transphobic views. She’s given support to outright transphobes who say the really hateful and harmful things that she can’t get away with saying herself.

Like many of your type, you’ll say the “right” things like "Everyone is entitled to be treated with fairness and dignity, no matter who they are or what they 'identify’ as...” and then in the next sentence undermine that with a false counter narrative.

Dori Monson being suspended from the sports shows has nothing to do with suppressing discussion. It has to do with him being an asshole and attempting to delegitimize transgender people. As is typical of people such as yourself, you’re extremely selective in what you accept at face value as it suits your worldview.

As someone who has a dear friend who's a transgender woman, it seems as natural as anyone else in the world. It wasn't always that way.

I remember being as perplexed about it as MrB, as it really is unfathomable at first for the majority of us to even consider why someone would want to change their genitals - but when you know someone who felt she was on the wrong bus throughout her life, the transformation into happiness is truly magnificent to witness.

We shouldn't be quick to accuse people of transphobia as it's entirely plausible that greater understanding and compassion occurs when you actually know someone who made that journey.

52

Having no one in the office also means no back-stabbing, gossip, and fucking interpersonal drama distracting one from work. At our law firm the paralegal supervisor spent half her time herding cats and tamping down personal spats between overly-sensitive, immature, primarily female paralegals. She does "therapy" does half the time. To be clear: we are talking about adults. The only way to stay out of it is to keep to yourself - which I did. Thus working at home not that different for me.

The time saved by management not having to counsel and babysit has got to be significant.

53

@44:

Then clearly you haven't been paying one fucking bit of attention to anything anyone has said to you in the past eleven fucking years you've been on SLOG. No surprise, that, but shit, do you have to come on here EVERY FUCKING DAY and prove it?

And if you simply cannot employ the word "fuck" without coyly bleeping out a couple of letters - do you REALLY FUCKING THINK that fools anyone? - then why even use it at all? You're the one who is literally ALWAYS FUCKING TELLING PEOPLE how crass and unintelligent us fucking cussers are; turning a "u" and a "c" into a "#" doesn't mean you're not fucking cussing, it just means you're too emotionally and developmentally stunted to to admit it - even to yourself you fucking cowardly cum-custard.

57

@53: The bleeping of letters is also a style. Perhaps if you thought if it that way, you'd be less agitated.

66

@55:

Not surprising to see your mental and psychological development hasn't progressed past the fifth grade if you still cling to those quaintly anachronistic, not to mention thoroughly debunked notions of 1950's era "decorum".

Contrary to your worthless-as-shit opinion, science has unequivocally demonstrated that people who swear tend to be more intelligent and have better linguistic skills than those who don't:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S038800011400151X

https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/campuspress.yale.edu/dist/a/1215/files/2016/05/Giordano-rg5y5r.pdf

Additionally, swearing is proven to relieve stress, dull the sensation of pain and is linked with traits like openness and honesty:

https://www.discovermagazine.com/health/worried-about-your-foul-mouth-swearing-could-actually-be-good-for-you

Finally, swearing has physical, as well as mental and psychological benefits, and may actually make you stronger:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1469029216301352

So, to all you fake-pearl-clutching twatwaffles I say again: go fuck yourselves you fucking sanctimonious, donkey-fellating cockwombles- you already have sticks shoved so solidly up your assholes it should be easy, dare I say, even pleasurable.

67

sticks, Comte -- is that what the incels are using these days? I'd heard it was gophers or marmonts or some shit or was it goebbels? make it MAGAty, if you're gonna make it at all damn it.

69

From the DiscoverMagazine article in @66:

"In the study, the researchers asked volunteers to think of as many words beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet as possible in one minute. Afterwards, they tasked the volunteers to rattle off as many swear words as they could within the same time frame. By comparing the scores in both fluency experiments, the scientists found that those who scored higher in verbal fluency were also better equipped to spout off obscenities."

You can't make this sh#t up!

No they wouldn't. Decent college team, sure. Perhaps even an elite HS team stacked with D-1 college and pro prospects would give them a run, but the overwhelming majority of HS teams would get their asses handed to them. Pretty cool article on some of the squads/players WNBA teams (including the Storm) use for practice purposes.

What I find sort of fascinating is that all these people like MrB, Raindrop, McFuckFace, Duck Fart, et al, come here every day and are proud to show the world just how fucking stupid they are. Regardless of his insensitive transgender comments, Dori should be rotated out of his radio show and the Seahawks pre/post game shows because he is a terrible broadcaster. His obnoxious voice is shrapnel to my ears. He is THE reason I don't listen to KIRO radio at all anymore; the fear that I will hear his voice in a radio commercial is just too much. At the same time, from his pronunciation and voice inflection, it's clear that he's in love with his own voice -he thinks he's Rush Limbaugh. Dori rarely has anything interesting to say because he's too busy whining about insignificant issues. The last time I listened to his show he was pushing the Swiftboater's Conspiracy. Bye Dori!

99

@87 Fuck yeah. Well said. Every village has its collection of idiots
