Contract/freepance work is done in many fields and can be as lucrative as a normal salaried position. I work on-contract through a freelance agency and it affords me flexibility in my schedule as well as the opportunity to work with many different companies.
Yes, you have to set aside the money for taxes yourself...gasp, basic math oh noes!

You know, if you want an employer to pay a share of your taxes, or you want employer sponsored health benefits, or workers comp, you could go out and get a W2 job. You sacrifice these things if you really want to "be your own boss" because in an employment setting it’s you boss who is paying for all of these benefits.
