States where they have flouted any and every possible way to stop the spread now want to send their sick to states that have been locked down, so they can make sure to make the spread even worse. North Dakota's governor just stated that all doctors and nurses with COVID have to continue working despite being sick. This is where we're at, people. WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT THANKSGIVING. If only Americans had brains. If only Americans had anything other than rampant self-interest. If only Americans believed in science. If only Americans...

The best thing that every American could do this Thanksgiving is sit at home and realize it is a holiday celebrating the slaughter of 700,000 Native Americans (and then causing who knows how many additional deaths due to the spread of disease). The best thing every American could do this Thanksgiving is decide to no longer celebrate Thanksgiving, stay home, save lives, and reflect on its history and how 100% of is a fucking lie that props up white supremacist ideology and, oh, I don't know, fucking change. But no...Americans want to travel and spread sickness and kill people so they can stuff themselves with food and pretend they are exercising their rights of freedom. Meanwhile they are just fucking dumb.

@1
If only Americans had brains....
Well, for starters, then Trump would have received about 32% of the votes 10 days ago, instead of 47%.
And Americans would have realized that Obamacare and the ACA are the same thing.
And Americans would have never have voted for.....oh God any one of us could go on and on.

Is Vegas taking bets on cases/deaths for January 2021?

People are saying COVID came to America in a shipment of MAGA hats from China.

6

Whats the alternative to the “toy hammer of closing restaurants and bars?” Arresting people in their homes? Fines? I’m sure that will be enforced equitably and more interactions with the police will be a good thing...not. We have a cultural problem and I don’t see us legislating ourselves out of that.

We’ll do better next pandemic. Asia has been practicing this for years and so of course they’re doing better.

7

Tell me again why we are supposed to seek middle ground and compromise with people who are actively trying to kill us?

8

@7 - You're not supposed to, it's optional.

9

Literally our Seattle hospitals just DOUBLED the number of COVID patients admitted, and we're at 3.5% positive rate during testing.

Quite frankly, the entire nation should be on lockdown right now.

10

Thank you, Governors Jay Inslee, Kate Brown, and Gavin Newsom, for all your diligent efforts to keep the West Coast healthy and safe. Many states are not as fortunate.

11

@1 xina and @2 pat L: Agreed and seconded. I'm certainly not going anywhere this holiday season.

12

The loons are like “you won’t ALL die ,c’mon “ . I’m in the cave til spring ( the bongshelter)

13

Cancelled my tickets down the coast late last night. The toll of being in an LDR is made way harder by all this, but adding one more body to a crush of travel when the least-careful people will be out and about, while cases are ticking up, is pretty much the definition of being part of the problem. And "I'd like to see my cats and my partner" doesn't in any way qualify as an emergency.

(Can't be righteously indignant if you're not righteous, you know.)

Fuck this stupid pandemic.

15

Is that the same Governor of CA that recently attended a birthday dinner celebration with at least 12 friends ? Just curious, thanks !

17

Anyone who gets on a plane now is nuts. And traveling to/from another state (most of which have more virus than we do) is just saying "fuck you" to everyone here.
@16 - we are not talking about people who "have to report to work." The issue now is people who absolutely do not have to report to Grandma's house but are going to anyway. Dumbfucks.

18

@16 Doofy? Is that you? Still pissed that Winn-Dixie ran out of your favorite gallon tub of Breyer's, huh? We know you're full of shit, but c'mon, stop hoarding the Charmin.

19

@17 dvs99: Agreed and seconded. Among many reasons why I am social distancing and staying home over the holidays.

20

@16: I hear this a lot and I'm confused by the logic. For over generations now the US police state has actively shredded every Constitutional and Civil Right we have with judges and the majority of the population openly supporting it, except when it comes to their rights, of course.

What is it about Corona that makes these same boot lickers for State violence against peaceful protestors suddenly refer to this as a "Stalinist State" over wearing a mask?

Of all the Constitutional violations we now accept as routine, a mask isn't even in the top 100.

21

Ok so in Seattle we’ve had 100% mask+distancing compliance since spring and extremely high safety standards in public places. Every largish metro in WA is highly compliant. Can anyone explain to me why corona is popping off here anyway?

Sure fuck anti maskers but can we reasonably blame them for the surge in this state? And idk anything about good or bad covid policy, but I do know this: people have only so much patience being punished for following the rules, no matter how science-loving they consider themselves to be

22

"... know this: people have only so much patience being punished for following the rules, no matter how science-loving they consider themselves to be." --@Barfy

no. we're ALL being Punished 'cause The Selfish Few choose indifference cum infliciting over Common Sense. they're Fucking With US. is it any wonder they love the Fascism?

Regardless of any constitutional or legal issues relating to pandemic related shut downs as a practical matter isolating people to their homes or implementing cautionary quarantines is not enforceable. It cannot be effectively enforced as @6 wrote. The only thing worse than a bad law is one that is unenforceable and subject to being applied to abuse marginalized people.

You have to be responsible for your actions. I choose to wear a mask, avoid crowds and largely not go out. I suggest you do the same and not worry about what others do when you can’t control it. Some of these arguments/rants read like a left wing version of Q-Anon. The government isn’t going to ride in and save you. Moscow Mitch is not your friend nor is Pelosi. They are simply ideologically opposed versions of each other. Even though the executive branch should stabilize under Biden the legislature will be all but inoperable.

That said the smugness of Smith, Mudede, Burns and other Stranger writers shows a huge blind spot to those that can’t or haven’t worked during the pandemic. They aren't lucky enough to work from home. Many aren’t getting unemployment. The economic and societal damage of the pandemic will take as much if not a bigger toll on the populace than the medical implications. The call to shut everything down regardless of the cost is not the answer.
