Turkey Shame!!!

The more businesses "stick it to the man" by refusing to follow COVID restrictions, the worse the spread of the virus gets and the more businesses go out of business forever. I fail to comprehend how people believe if they open their business and get people sick, that their business will thrive.

Meanwhile 60 Minutes has done a comprehensive story on COVID long haulers and they are mostly young people who had no underlying conditions but are now sick with symptoms that cannot be explained and doctors cannot help them (one of the women in the story IS a doctor who had COVID who is now helping COVID long haulers - especially because too many of these patients, especially women and especially Black women, are being told it's all in their head). There was a woman working on studying the effects of COVID (by examining the brains and bodies of autopsied people who died from COVID). She discussed how they found massive amounts of blood clots in people's brains and livers and lungs and so many places they were shocked. The brain clots were the most concerning, as they were of a size that would cause an aneurysm. Sadly, she died suddenly of a massive heart attack, so her work is no longer being done.

Because this country chose to do nothing, tens of millions of people who had COVID now have a pre-existing condition that may affect their health for their entire lives. Because this country chose to do nothing, hundreds of thousands of people are dead and thousands are still dying daily and who knows what the total death toll will be when all is said and done (2 million is no longer out of the realm of possibility). Because this country chose to do nothing our already shitty and wholly inadequate health care system will be in shambles when this is over, mostly because so many health care professionals will be dead or they will have quit en masse (both are already happening) and the astronomical cost of the care provided for COVID patients past, present, and future will be catastrophic.

Because this country chose to do nothing, tens of millions of people will suffer (they already are). Some industries and jobs many never recover and if they do it will take years, if not decades for them to return to anything resembling a pre-COVID existence. Tens of millions of people will be homeless (on top of the tens of millions that already are). Tens of millions of people will be unemployed or underemployed (on top of the tens of millions that already are). And the countless other side effects, such as the damage done to the mental health of tens of millions of people, the damage done to children who were already behind education-wise, the damage done, the damage done, the damage done.... All of the damage done that could have been prevented.

On a global level there are already alarms sounding of massive famine, death, destruction, and catastrophic loss that this world, this society, the human beings on the face of the earth right now are wholly unprepared for and will not be able to handle in any way, shape, or form.

If you zero on the faces in that pic, you see not just ignorance, but palpable fear. They know on some level what they are doing in that moment is monumentally stupid, and that these photos will invite deep, angry mockery. But the lure of belonging to a tribe is too great, and so they tighten their faces and grimly proceed.

How is Biden's 7 million vote lead "record-breaking?"

And there's this:

‘Nobody Sees Us’: Testing-Lab Workers Strain Under Demand
Laboratory technologists have been working nonstop to help the nation diagnose an ever-growing number of coronavirus cases.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/03/health/coronavirus-testing-labs-workers.html?smid=ig-nytimes&utm_source=curalate_like2buy&utm_medium=curalate_like2buy_3euQ1BMQ__144ab75a-e3ee-4b45-b7b9-97994384d6ef&crl8_id=144ab75a-e3ee-4b45-b7b9-97994384d6ef

Which will be followed by how are we going to get more than 352 million people vaccinated in this country when the initial rollout of the vaccine is just over 18 million doses (and that's just one round - each vaccine requires 2 doses, 2 shots).

14

@5 I think people are confused. Biden has gotten more votes than any president-elect (that is record breaking), but the number of votes in the spread is not record breaking. Roosevelt and then Reagan had the largest margins in term of number of votes in the 1900s.

@6 - That looks like every frat/sorority 'mixer' photo ever taken. Girl with the big boobies flamming them out front and center? Check. In related news, same frat/sor mixers are known as superspreader events this year. Maybe herpes cures Covid? We can only hope.

And how exactly does "Eat shit Antifa' figure into the equation? it's just spouting slogans that don't even intermingle. Black Lives Matters hate that you having a gala event? Stoopid.

26

@25 - Trying to reason with whatever the Republican party and its followers are these days is like trying to help a wolverine missing one leg that's on it's last breaths before death.

You cannot reason with it.

If you reach your hand out to help it will only bite you.

As much as you want to help, you must just let it die. Such is life.

Obituary of Marvin J. Farr

Dr. Marvin James Farr, 81, of Scott City, Kan., passed away Dec. 1, 2020, in isolation at Park Lane Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by more than 260,000 Americans infected with covid-19. He died in a room not his own, being cared for by people dressed in confusing and frightening ways. He died with covid-19, and his final days were harder, scarier and lonelier than necessary. He was not surrounded by friends and family.

Marvin was born May 23, 1939 to Jim and Dorothy Farr of Modoc, Kan. He was born into an America recovering from the Great Depression and about to face World War 2, times of loss and sacrifice difficult for most of us to imagine. Americans would be asked to ration essential supplies and send their children around the world to fight and die in wars of unfathomable destruction. He died in a world where many of his fellow Americans refuse to wear a piece of cloth on their face to protect one another.

If it's a gym or a restaurant, report them for Fire violations to the Fire Department and for Health violations to the Health Department.

Then lock their doors at 3 am with a chain and padlock.

35

The comparisons of today with the 1918 flu are striking: Many many Americans refused to wear masks for that one, too, and President Wilson pretended that the disease didn't exist (afraid it would decrease morale for the troops in Europe). There were superspreader events like a parade in Philadelphia that killed thousands. Lots of fake "cures" touted. The difference then is that they didn't know about viral diseases, so doctors tried to treat it as if it were a bacterial disease, often ineffectively. Estimates are that up to 2 million Americans died and 40 million worldwide, "only" about 2% of the country. The good news this time is that CoVID-19 doesn't spread quite as easily as does the flu, so that if everyone did use masks, we could largely curtail the spread, even without a fully effective vaccine.

How Many Might Die Even With a COVID Vaccine?
— Some grim back-of-the-envelope math
https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/89918

39

@28 - the problem is that the 50k or so fatalities from the flu are WITH a vaccine so we know that they are not likely to explode past that in a given year. Whatever the flu's fatality rate is, you only apply it to the fraction of the population that gets infected, which is limited by the vaccine. There is also the point that the flu virus circulating in any given year will have some similiarity to those that have gone around in the past, so that a large number of people will have at least some immunity.

For COVID, it appears that almost everyone is vulnerable to infection. that means that until we have a vaccine, even a 1-2% fatality rate will be 1-2% of essentially EVERYONE if we don't control spread. In a country of 330M people, that is 3-6 million dead.

You can nit-pick all you want about wanting a bright line beyond which lockdowns would be constitutionally permissible, but I'd wager that almost nobody would put that line at being upwards of 3-6 million dead Americans. And if you believe that 3-6 million dead is acceptable so that you can go to the gym, you are far beyond redemption.

40

In MAGA-land they're so upset about violations of their constitutionally-protected right to eat unlimited hot wings on Game Night with ninety of their closest friends that they're willing to scrap the whole idea of constitutional government and live under a military junta where they never have to wear a mask if they don't want to and their children aren't indoctrinated in public schools with godless propaganda like "math." Martial law and half-price margaritas for everyone! That's how we spell Freedom in Magaland.

NATIONAL CENTER FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
130,000 – 210,000 Avoidable COVID-19 Deaths – and Counting – in the U.S

Why are U.S. deaths disproportionately high?
--Insufficient testing capacity
--Delayed response
--Lack of mask mandate or guidance
--Politicization, leadership vacuum, and failure of top officials to model best practices

A pandemic is not a time for a decentralized and combative national response. It requires strong leadership and coordination across states towards a common purpose of defeating the threat with the might of the whole nation.

'COVID risk to ALL Americans is at historic high': Leaked White House report issues dire post-Thanksgiving warning as US records highest single-day death toll since April 30 with 2,597 fatalities

All of the U.S. is in danger due to COVID-19, said the White House coronavirus task force in one of its most dire reports sent secretly to US states this week
A map in the report, obtained by NBC News, reveals that almost the entire U.S. is deep red, indicating more than 500 new infections were reported per capita in nearly every state
North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and 16 other states top the list for most inundated states

Tuesday's death toll was the highest recorded in the US since April 30 with 2,597 deaths
Hospitalizations set yet another record for the fourth day in a row with 98,691 Americans in inpatient care
Britain approved the Pfizer jab on Wednesday but the US is waiting for the FDA to meet to discuss the shot on December 10, drawing outrage from Americans
Florida became the third state in the US to record more than one million coronavirus cases, following Texas and California
The US recorded 180,083 new infections on Tuesday with single-day records set in at least four states
Officials in multiple states say that the record cases, hospitalizations and deaths may reflect lags from the Thanksgiving holiday
Last week, the U.S. also more new cases of coronavirus in U.S. nursing homes than have been recorded since the spring

COVID-19: Straight Answers from Top Epidemiologist Who Predicted the Pandemic

Wearing a cloth mask does not protect you much if you’re in close contact with someone who is COVID-19 contagious. It may give you 20 minutes, instead of 10, to avoid contracting the disease.

We can expect COVID-19 to infect 60% – 70% of Americans. That’s around 200 million Americans.

We can expect between 800,000 and 1.6 million Americans to die in the next 18 months if we don’t have a successful vaccine.

There is no guarantee of an effective vaccination and even if we find one, it may only give short term protection.

Speeding a vaccination into production carries its own risks.

The darkest days are still ahead of us. We need moral leadership, the command leadership that doesn’t minimize what’s before us but allows everyone to see that we’re going to get through it.

https://www.bluezones.com/2020/06/covid-19-straight-answers-from-top-epidemiologist-who-predicted-the-pandemic/

47

Some of the above got cut off

This disease may be the biggest event of our lifetimes.

3 months ago, COVID-19 was not even in the top 75 causes of death in this country. Much of the last month, it was the #1 cause of death in this country. This is more remarkable than the 1918 Flu pandemic.
There is no scientific indication Covid-19 will disappear of its own accord.
If you’re under age 55, obesity is the #1 risk factor. So, eating the right diet, getting physical activity, and managing stress are some of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from the disease.
One of the best things we can do for our aging parents is to get them out into the fresh air, while maintaining physical (not social) distancing.

48

@31 Bess: The acceptable death rate depends on what state society is in, and what can society do to prevent deaths. If you lived 200 years ago, when half the children died of childhood diseases, you'd accept that as normal. We wouldn't accept a disease that did that today, though.
10,000-50,000 dead a year in the U.S. from flu (about 0.01% of the country) is a lot less than died from it in 1918. And the present rate is still high, so we pretty much DO make sure that children get vaccinated for it repeatedly, and those vaccinations serve to attenuate the effects of the virus throughout our lifetimes, even though it's a slightly different strain of the virus each year.
The novel coronavirus is something our immune systems hasn't seen before, so we are all more susceptible to it than we are to the flu; a greater percentage dies the first time a new virus spreads into a population.
The other reason to vaccinate quickly is to prevent this virus from mutating. RNA viruses (flu, HIV, coronavirus) mutate much more quickly than do DNA viruses (Herpes, smallpox). Coronavirus mutates slower than flu in part because coronavirus has an enzyme that corrects mutations, but it still mutates more quickly than do DNA viruses. The quicker we eliminate this virus, AND the fewer copies of the virus out there, the better the odds of preventing it from mutating into more dangerous strains. Every person who prevents transmission (getting vaccinated, distancing, masks) helps keep it from forming strains that can infect other people more readily, and importantly, keep it from spreading into other species (like mink or dogs), where it could mutate unseen until spreading back to humans in an even more dangerous form.
So social distancing, masks, lockdowns, and vaccination are necessary, because: a) They will be effective at preventing transmission and mutation, even though the societal cost is heavy; b) We don't want a half million dead Americans a year from this virus and its mutated offspring to become the new normal.

They are going to the grocery store again, but don’t see vaccines making life normal right away.

@56: Rather, I think this forum of xina, blip, dvs99, biologist, shooting down misconceptions is productive discourse.

61

@31 - Dipshit, 280,000 deaths in 9 months is evidently the number you're looking for, a number on pace to be 8 times deadlier than an average flu year. Further, the flu has a vaccine, and we as a society have determined that is sufficient, it is all that can reasonably be done long-term.

The lockdowns and quarantines have been deemed worthwhile in this case because they are only temporary until an effective vaccine becomes available, an eventuality people who are actual experts...not Google experts like you...have deemed inevitable relatively quickly. If there was no hope of an effective vaccine, then your bitching would be valid; we would have to learn to live with it and invest in a shitload more hospitals. But that's not reality, is it.

Speaking of hospitals, the hospitals in Rubistan, where I live, are full, they've cancelled elective procedures and are shipping patients long distances to get them beds. That's the other thing that necessitates lockdowns and quarantines; overflowing hospitals. They cannot withstand much more in terms of admissions and staff burnout. Under your plan, one better hope they don't have a heart attack or car wreck! Or severe flu!

Xina's post about the WWII era is bang-on target. The very people who extol and hero-worship the WWII generation, yet storm state capitols with guns over being told to wear a mask, would have folded to the Japanese on December 8, 1941. Give up Gasoline!? No new cars for 4 years!? No new tires!? What about my constitutional freedom of movement, mother-fuckers!? To the barricades!!! Meat rations? Sugar rations? WTF? Where's my M-1 rifle, dammit!?

Those were actual sacrifices for years. You're asked to wear a flimsy square of cloth across your mouth and nose for less than a year, and you selfish weaklings lose your ever-fucking minds over it.

Comparing COVID-19 Deaths to Flu Deaths Is like Comparing Apples to Oranges
The former are actual numbers; the latter are inflated statistical estimates

If we compare, for instance, the number of people who died in the United States from COVID-19 in the second full week of April to the number of people who died from influenza during the worst week of the past seven flu seasons (as reported to the CDC), we find that the novel coronavirus killed between 9.5 and 44 times more people than seasonal flu. In other words, the coronavirus is not anything like the flu: It is much, much worse.

When people talk about acceptable amounts of death, they are actually talking about acceptable amounts of death of OTHERS. On 9/11 less than 3,000 people were killed and the entire country was moved to destroy those who did the killing (by believing a lying POTUS who took us to war with a country that had nothing to do with 9/11).

Every day we're seeing the equivalent of the number of deaths that happened on 9/11 and nearly 75 million people are like shrugging like it's no big deal. It's NBD to THEM because they want to live their lives and do not care about the people who are dying.
