"A man claimed to have a bomb after walking into the headquarters of the Spokane County Democratic Party"

I was just wondering what Matt Shea was up to lately.

Am I the only one laughing at the exploding cigar?

Better a centrist's wet dream than an extremist's nightmare.

Biden really needs to do better than starting with breaking laws to fill his administration. We've had enough of that shit during Trump's maladministration. There is a reason that that rule exists and Biden's alright put too many military people in positions of power. The military is supposed to be non-partisan. Period. Full stop.

@4
I'll take a year of Biden's imperfections over one week of Trump any day.

8

@4: Biden didn't break any laws. You're referring to a tradition. However, that tradition pertained to the fact that civilians are less prone to military intervention than the brass is; but these days it's the opposite.

I don't know why that whack-job in Spokane just didn't try this:

I definitely think civilian oversight of the military is pretty indefensible as a policy position. Though in Trump's defense, he appointed six different defense secretaries over the course of his four years. At that rate of attrition, you're gonna run out of qualified civilians relatively soon. We should probably be thankful we didn't get any nominees from North Korea or the KGB.

@5 guesty: Agreed and seconded. Mark Zuckerberg certainly looks like the reigning Mafia king of venture capitalism, gleefully running any competition out of business.

@7 pat L for the WIN, BAYBEE! :)

@9 OverflowingDoofy: Stop snorting the MAGA Kool-Aid, Mr. word salad.

@10 Morty: This is re a different comment thread, but----are you running for Sheriff? I think you'd kick serious ass. :)

14

@13 - HaHa, no I was joking about launching a failed run for Governor. I would have to crank up the crazy to unattainable levels (for me) to get elected Sheriff here. And I've been too vocal in my views to fake it.

15

Oh boy-O, trollz trying out their magic crap on people they keep mistaking for mushrooms. Remind me, what did tell US to do in 2016???

16

Hey, did everyone hear about the weird toxic green gas that the Feddies were shooting at Portland demonstrators this spring/summer?

@18: Indeed. They and Them pronouns are appropriate only for individuals suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder.

20

So, now we can add psychiatry to the long - and getting longer by the minute - list of subjects about which Randrip knows absolutely nothing, but is nevertheless obsessively compelled to make idiotic statements...

21

@20: As is your obsession to snip at my heels.

22

@19: If a person asked to be called Ted, would you keep calling them Theodore? That would be a real asshole move. So how is that different from using they/them pronouns when someone asks you to?

23

@22: Aside from my snark, the English languages affords us to use singular and plural to reference reality.

I would be courteous and abide by referring to "they/them" in normal conversation. But in response to a firefighter's question if there is anyone still in the burning house, I would say that "HE is still in there!"

QED

24

Jasmyne, "weary" and "wary" are not interchangeable. Only one of them means "skeptical", and it's not the one you think. Embarrassing.

25

@23 And because you would use it, it becomes the One True Way (tm) for everyone else to follow? Also, how did you manage to go from "They and Them pronouns are appropriate only for individuals suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder." to "I would be courteous and abide by referring to "they/them" in normal conversation." in a few hours?

I mean, a firefighter isn't going to go by a not-male person because you used "he" as a generic pronoun, but that doesn't mean it's the only way to address the question. Nor are most of us called on to tell a firefighter who is in a burning building most of the time.

26

@14 Morty: Keep on rocking the house.:)

Jesus, Rainy---if you keep on snorting the Kool-Aid you won't have any consciousness by lunch.

27

@16 crimes against humanity.

It's about time we had a gender-neutral pronoun that had clear plural and singular forms. The plural meaning of "they" is getting in the way of solving this problem. We had no difficulty learning to use "Ms." instead of Mrs. or Miss, and to the best of my knowledge society has not crumbled. No reason that the other pronouns need to be gendered.

On the other hand, there needs to be one pronoun for everyone. You are not a bad person if you meet someone once and can't remember that they want to be "they" instead of "he." God forbid they have decided that they prefer something unusual or made up and you have to recall on the spot whether it is "xie" or "Zer" or whatever.

Whether you like "he" and "she" or not, they had the virtue of not making people remember an impossible number of preferences from people you have barely met, or guess.

Surely we can come up with one word that applies to everyone, and has clear singular and plural forms (I certainly don't want to put Raindrop in any danger the next time his/her house is on fire)?

Maybe everyone could be "Pat" or "Patton" in the plural?
