The lawsuit is a significant escalation in the government’s effort to hold major pharmacy chains responsible for their role in the opioid crisis.

While much of the litigation around opioid addiction has focused on doctors and distributors, a lawsuit filed in federal court in May by two Ohio counties accused CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid of also fueling the problem.

The retailers were accused of selling millions of pills in tiny communities, rewarding pharmacists with the highest volumes and promoting opioids as safe and effective.

The Justice Department said Walmart had shirked its responsibilities not only as a pharmacy dispensing pills to its customers but as a major drug distributor to its own pharmacies, obligated to report suspicious prescriptions to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Given the nationwide scale of those violations, Walmart’s failures to follow basic legal rules helped fuel a national crisis,” the lawsuit stated.

Gee, THANK YOU, gluttonous fossil fuel industry, Warren Buffett, and Burlington-Northern Railroad, for dumping crude oil all over north Whatcom County! I'm sure you really made all those living in the Custer area, south of Blaine and the U.S. / Canadian Border who suddenly had to evacuate their homes feel safe, secure, and all a-glow this holiday season. I'm glad Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo is investigating the derailment.
Many of us citizens, myself included, concerned about the environmental impacts of oil and coal train derailments warned about such incidents happening here after the Lac-Megantic, Quebec derailment from July 5, 2013--just one of many permanently destructive examples of unchecked corporate greed.
How tragic that such blatant carelessness and disregard of the health of the Earth's diminishing resources had to finally come to our region---particularly a part of Whatcom County where many people have been baited by the profiteering fossil fuel industry's cries of "Good Jobs Now!"
This senseless destruction for the benefit of so few and to the devastation of the rest of us has got to stop NOW.
