"Don't think about that. Stick your hands in the snow at the rear of the sled to steer, kind of like how a kayaker uses their paddle."

seems like Brave kayakers don't need no stinkin' 'sled'
just hop in and Do NOT forget thy Paddle
but lose the Lifejacket maybe.

oh, yeah -- Helmet!

First rule of any glissade: Check your run-out. A steep hill that leads right to a busy intersection or a bunch of cars is less than ideal. There is power in numbers, as folks can patrol the bottom to see if there are drivers around.

There is a lot of snow on the ground up here by Northgate. I measured 8 inches, and it is still coming down hard. I'm about to put on my skinny skis and explore the neighborhood. Eventually I'll end up at Jackson Park (the golf course) which is a really fun place for skis or sleds.

Probably worth mentioning that sledding in the city can be dangerous. Streets often have cars on both sides and they are a danger to shedders. Norm Maleng’s daughter lost her life running into a car at the side of the road..

Snowmageddon sledders: Everybody stay warm, healthy, and safe.

@3: What a freak accident it was. The inner tube broke the girls were sledding on and they went under a parked car.

We have a lot of sledders in our neighborhood, but they don't seem to know much about how to go about it. For instance, we have several blocks that are just perfect for sledding - the slope is steep enough to get a good speed going, and the street at the bottom is a so-called "healthy street" so there's no need to worry about cars.

But instead of using that, they are opting to sled down the city owned public staircases, which are very steep (which is fun), but have multiple landings that you have to push yourself out of. (That's a recipe for a fat lip).
