"Racism isn’t the consequence of individuals who deliberately choose to engage in racist actions out of hate or fear. Racism is a system that ensures that people of variously imagined stigmatized “races” are held to different standards from others, given diminished options, and perceived as deserving their diminished status because that they have a diminished status is proof that they are worse."

@1: The such a system can be changed, or has changed, for the better - otherwise it would be even more racist to say that it couldn't.

3

"Something about eating shrimp cocktail on a Ferris wheel during the plague feels off to me."

On the contrary. I'm guessing that all the food is laid out before you board the gondola and start going around and around. You'd probably be isolated in the gondola with your significant other or family. You'd achieve perfect social distancing, without potentially exposing anyone, either customers or staff, to Covid. It would be just as safe as take-out.

The price is a little out of my league, but the way I'm imagining it going down, I can't think of a safer dining-out experience right now.

4

@2: Along with other gems of wisdom today you've posted.. You are doing the mental equivalent of running with scissors. Put them down before you hurt yourself- further

6

@2: Take a breather from your usual incognizant word salad spewing, Rainy, before what's left of your brain explodes. Jesus, you must have wolfed down a truckload of YooHoos and Cocoa Puffs over the past few days. Snowmageddon's gonna kill ya at this rate.

@5: The neofascists on the RIGHT are the ones who eat their own, jackass. Next time use SpellCheck lil MAGA-QAnon dupe.

7

@4: However, if I said racism is a system that can get worse I'd be applauded.

@6: I'm not in your cartoons anymore dear.

8

@2 -- What the fuck does that even mean? Systemic racism can increase or decrease. No fucking shit. Saying the situation won't get much better is not racist, it is only pessimistic.

More to the point, what the fuck does that have to do with what @1 wrote? This looks like the ramblings of a poorly programmed bot.

9

Parler being back up has a silver lining: it's better to have the CHUDs out in the open. Most people don't bother to monitor places like 4chan and 8kun. So much fuckery could be avoided if more people did. I'm familiar with the whole futility of "pissing into an ocean of piss" concept, but it doesn't hurt to be aware of what goes on in the dark, slimy places under rocks on the internet, and to break up extremist circle-jerk safe spaces with dissenting points of view.

10

@8: You're getting there. Conversely, saying the system is getting better is optimistic. But saying the situation can't get better, insulated by @1 (e.g. 'ensures'), or is inherently entrenched, is obstinately racist because that assumes racism is an absolute and immutable.

We know that to be false, because every aspect of the human condition and behavior can be changed.

11

I know the LAPD sucks but that valentine made me gasp. No words.

13

@10. This is a non sequitur. The author's claim was not that the system cannot be changed, but that racism is, in fact, a system composed of structural and institutional de facto racial inequity (how people are treated differently on the basis of perceived identity by the law and government, etc.). It is not merely stereotypes and individual acts of bias that most people associate with the term.

You insinuated that from a quote without reading the post to deflect from its actual meaning, then attacked a straw man that the point of the article was that the system is unchangeable. This is an idiotic conclusion, but succeeds at getting others to miss the point by deflecting to stupidity, as is often the point of your kneejerk contrarianism.

14

@13: Then consider the author's last sentence:

"if institutional racism is a plausible explanation about how the world works, then the basic premises of their political agenda are flawed. It is, and they are. And they’re racist."

She's referring to those who don't subscribe to critical race theory. Essentially she's saying if you don't subscribe to how I view the world, you're racist.

Is that the kind of disposition we really need to improve race relations Garb? Insinuating racism where it may or may not exist? No accounting of individual actions or situations.

What a fraud.

"["Just World"] Libertarians accept the strictures of birth that make sure the game is rigged, but they don’t accept the strictures of government that try to make sure that individuals are free to achieve their best. They don’t want a fully free system, in which all people are equally free to achieve all things; they want a system in which they can thrive without restriction. They like the restrictions of birth. They argue that help from the government creates dependency, while accepting the help they’ve gotten from their birth hasn’t. That doesn’t make sense. If accepting help creates dependency, then they’re dependent on their birth.

The two premises of Just World Libertarianism—[1.]people get what they deserve, and [2.] an individual can achieve whatever he wants with sufficient will (the gendered pronoun is deliberate)—are confounded by African-American men being stopped more often, searched more often, charged more often, and getting harsher penalties than white men. If our system doesn’t treat African American men in the same way it treats white men, and therefore African-American men are not equally able to achieve whatever they want, then the major premises of Just World Libertarianism are wrong.

And they are. Racism isn’t the consequence of individuals who deliberately choose to engage in racist actions out of hate or fear. Racism is a system that ensures that people of variously imagined stigmatized “races” are held to different standards from others, given diminished options, and perceived as deserving their diminished status because that they have a diminished status is proof that they are worse.

[Conclusion] And that’s why Just World Libertarianism is racist. The adherents of that ideology are, in my experience, non-falsifiably committed to exactly the premises that fuel institutional racism. Of course, it isn’t only Just World Libertarians who are irrationally committed to the just world model and faith in the will—so are American fundagelicals.

@14.

"She's referring to those who don't subscribe to critical race theory. Essentially she's saying if you don't subscribe to how I view the world, you're racist." No she isn't, she's saying that their theory doesn't take into account how institutional factors affect how the same actions committed by different people in the real world are dealt with by society's institutions.

"Is that the kind of disposition we really need to improve race relations Garb? Insinuating racism where it may or may not exist? No accounting of individual actions or situations." Another straw man. The point is that individual actions are institutionally handled differently on the basis of race.

"What a fraud." Yes, you are.

FFS! My partner had a ballot rejected one year simply because he improved his handwriting and the improved one didn't match the old sloppy one! All he had to do was provide a signature more like his regular sloppy handwriting and his voted counted. If anyone had a ballot bounced back in a similar manner and simply let it go by not following up - they only have themselves to blame.

19

Great news! Tim Eyman wants to continue grifting. Please do, Tim. Not only do people who voted for Loren Culp deserve to have you lighten their wallets, but another round of your legal violations will land you in jail. It's a win all around!

20

@16: "The point is that individual actions are institutionally handled differently on the basis of race."

Not all the time, not by all institutions. And guess what, the institutions are made up of individuals and only individuals can affect change on institutions.

21

@20: "Not all the time, not by all institutions."

No, it was a generalization, and therefore not applicable all the time, to every institution, everywhere. Is that the same excellent, incisive reasoning which had you parroting the "HIllary's E-Mail Servers!!1!" hate propaganda, non-stop in 2016?

If you don't want to understand how institutionalized racism hurts more of us, more effectively, than does individual racism, then you cannot be made to understand it. You can just admit this if you want. Why you'd instead want to portray yourself as incapable of reading or understanding plain English text is beyond me.

22

@21: More than a generalization, it's a philosophy.

Institutional racism exists, but any discussion about its regression (a good thing) is discounted or even perceived as racist.

That's a problem.
