Of course Cuomo won't quit. He's a fucking bully. After winning his second election for Governor he chose to be a Republican in deed (after using Democrats to win the election). I lived in NYS and voted for him (though I wanted Zephyr Teachout to be the Democratic nominee in 2014, but she lost the primary). The last good and decent Governor of NYS was Mario Cuomo. Pataki sucked and everyone since him has been mired in scandal - Spitzer, Paterson, and now Cuomo. There are many things I love about NY - the way the state government is run is not one of them.

9

@7: As nasty with women as Trump was, perhaps more.

10

Some kids are digging in and making peanut butter and jelly out of a crap sandwich and others are refining their bong-making skills, so Governor Inslee's recommendation for in-person instruction is well-advised. Governor Cuomo is a serial-pervert and should save the taxpayer's some financial resources and resign. The recent attestation from the young journalist who was afraid to attend gatherings for fear of being fondled by this degenerate points to the need for resignation or removal by impeachment. Mr. Cuomo is taking a page from President Trump, the turd-monger, by digging in his heels and lying, the way Trump, the green-orange howler-monkey would just make stuff up, and was thankfully shown the door and will hopefully get molested in federal prison for tax evasion. That racist tirade was beyond offensive and that person who belittled those black basketball players for kneeling for the National Anthem should be taken behind the barn and cornholed, diabetes or Twinkie defense notwithstanding. That was utterly beyond comprehension, indicating that racism is alive and well in America, what with these assassinations by police departments, which are beginning to operate like Bolivian death squads. The taxpayers get their clocks cleaned and the survivors, although financially compensated, remain understandably bitter and broken-hearted. Also, the way Republicans cling to ancient racist inclinations like a little black jockey statue in their front yard, such as naming the Cleveland baseball franchise the "Indians" without input from Native Americans for example, is disconcerting. With the Democrats stellar performance, led by Biden-Harris and their generous COVID relief policies, we may see the eradication of Republiturds along with COVID-19. Hopefully AG Ferguson can take Eyman to the cleaners for litigation expenses and drive a stake thought the black heart of this political opportunist and carpetbagger once and for all. Let us pray Eyman doesn’t go zombie and start posting ludicrous anti-tax, pro-anarchy videos in his wife-beater tank top on social media while stealing office furnishings.

https://newrepublic.com/article/142670/andrew-cuomo-profits-republican-senate

But if you look under the hood of some of Cuomo’s banner accomplishments, they are not as impressive as the headlines imply. Take, for example, Cuomo’s free college bill. Because of the way it’s structured, the plan has been labeled as free college for the middle class. Cuomo’s plan covers tuition, but not other expenses like room and board. According to the Times, for a four-year degree, this saves students around $26,000 out of $83,000 total—meaning they would still have to pay the lion’s share. The program will only help an estimated 32,000 students this year, and those students are required to reside in New York state for years after.

Then there’s the minimum wage. In 2016, Cuomo claimed a progressive victory in raising New York’s wage to $15 per hour. “New York is showing the way forward on economic justice,” he said in an official statement at the time. But while the raise goes into effect faster in New York City, it is only set to be raised to $12.50 by 2020 for the rest of the state, and to $15 at a yet-to-be-determined time. The wage is not indexed to inflation, meaning that the Democrats may have to fight this battle all over again once it does eventually reach $15. And tipped workers, those working in the state’s huge restaurant industry, only get a raise of $10 per hour.

Furthermore, by hobbling their own party, Cuomo and the IDC have stalled a number of issues on which a blue state like New York should be at the vanguard. “Whether we’re talking about voting reforms, the DREAM Act, single-payer, or the women’s Reproductive Health Act,” Rivera says, “these are all fundamental Democratic issues that we would be able to achieve if we had a Democratic majority.” Without a unified Democratic Senate, Gianaris says, “there’s a host of substantive, progressive accomplishments that we’ve lost out on the opportunity to achieve.”

https://prospect.org/power/andrew-cuomo-s-fault/

There are loads more. Cuomo used Democrats to get into office and then betrayed them spectacularly. The fact that he his now embroiled in this scandal of sexual assault is yet another betrayal. Both Cuomo and Spitzer were exceptional Attorney Generals for the state prior to their being Governor (and both destroying their own careers through shocking hubris regarding their disregard not only for women - but for everyone who had voted to put them in the Governor's mansion).

Should Biden Cancel Student Debt?

Economics offers only part of the answer. The rest depends on whether you think higher education is an investment or a public good.

Whenever I think about student loan debt, one of the first things I think about — besides my own — is a 2018 essay by my colleague M.H. Miller.

As one of the 45 million Americans who collectively owe $1.71 trillion for student loans, Mr. Miller wrote about what it is like to have debt — more than $100,000 worth in his case — become the organizing principle of your life, to be incapacitated by it, suspended, at age 30, “in a state of perpetual childishness.”

Fuck you, Pete Ricketts, R-Nebraska,! Marijuana doesn't kill kids--YOU and the neofascist gun-crazed QANon GOP do! You're all out on federally banning safe, legal abortions for women, murdering doctors for providing safe, healthy care and preventing women from having to die while giving birth, all so you can kill their orphaned children in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere after you've slapped M-16 rifles in their hands by age 17 to go faht fer their Free Dumbs!

@1 kristofarian: Agreed and seconded. The GOP kills kids, women, LGBTQA+, and anyone else who isn't insanely wealthy, corrupt white RepubliKKKan male.

You'd have to be insane to move there.

@23 -- one reader's comment on @23
(take Note tS Journalists
an OP writers!):

Congratulations to the NYT and Steven Strogatz for this wonderful science article!

In the two years that I'm reading NYT science article now, this is the first one that corresponds to the ideal of a perfect science article: ALL technical terms used are explained, and explained in clear, daily life language, whereas the scientific concept at the core of the article is explained in a very clear way too, as are it's day to day applications.

This is EXACTLY what we need newspapers to do in order to finally obtain scientifically informed voters, and only such voters will be able to end the defining issue of our century, climate change.

Thanks again, and looking forward to reading Strogatz' book!!

one wee Taste from @23 -- "Denoted by the Greek letter π, this curious little number is approximately 3.14, although computers have calculated it out past 22 trillion digits and counting: 3.141592653589793238462643383279502…, a sequence never repeating, never betraying any pattern, going on forever, infinity on a platter."

26

@20 kristofarian: While my late father, a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran would agree with your good basic idea for mandatory civil service (2 years), I'm not sure reinstating the draft is best for everyone. My dad and I both had volunteered for our separate honorable four year enlistments. My father enlisted in the U.S. Navy to avoid being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 during the M*A*S*H era. Dad didn't feel comfortable with the idea of the U.S. government ordering him to serve in the U.S. Army by age 19, and when and where to train. He liked the idea of instead growing his sea legs. :)

@23 kristofarian: Happy Pi Day! Pi r square? No, pie are not square--pie are round. Brownie are square. (I could not resist---plus, I really sucked at Math) :)

27

Uh, no, Matt Rowan. I blame your racist comment not on your diabetes (low blood sugar, my ass!) but rather on TRUMPVID-19 induced stupidity and shameful ignorance. You and all your MAGA / QAnon / blindsided Trumpist ilk can do better.

31

@30 kristofarian: Oh. Okay, yes, i see your point and agree. I read "mandatory civil service of 2 years, as federal law in Israel" and had misinterpreted it as a required military service proposal for the United States. Incidentally, Switzerland also requires this of males approaching age 19. Women in Switzerland can also serve. It sounds like they have more of the luxury of being able to volunteer to serve.
Wow. Thanks, kris, for the reminder of getting involved and staying active. In addition to serving my country for four years, my family members and I have volunteered in my community many times. My family is environmentally and civically conscious, and affiliated with volunteer organizations. The younger generations need to express their voices and get involved.
Out of many, one.

32

Raindrop dear, Johnny Carson might have gassed on about his home state, but you sure didn't see him moving back there, did you?

Duck Fart, you may be able to get a job there (depending on what part of the state you are in) but that doesn't mean you'll be able to pay rent. Minimum wage is $9/hour for non restaurant jobs, and $2.13/hour for tipped jobs (and Nebraskans are lousy tippers, because no one has any money)

33

Well said, auntie Gee and Thank YOU for your (& your Fambly's!) service to this thee Richest Country in the Known fucking Universe.

38

Raindrop dear, I assure you that I am sufficiently light.

Here's my favorite Johnny Carson story: Long before "The Tonight Show" he was a local TV and radio celebrity in Omaha, and developed a friendship with the local cooking show hostess Martha Bohlsen, who was a very straightforward midwestern lady.

One day she was doing her live show and was talking about the importance of fresh eggs. She went to open a cupboard that was supposed to have a basket of eggs, and instead found a live chicken!

Johnny Carson had put the chicken in there, and came on set with the basket of eggs and said "I've been looking everywhere for her. Here's your eggs" and then scooped up the chicken and walked off the set.

39

speaking of Dear Johnny C. when Micheal Landon ('Little Joe' of long-running 'Bonanza' and later 'Little House on the Prarie' fame) was on Carson's 'Tonite Show' Johnny mentioned how their Ponderosa ranch had all these men (5, full time) -- and no women -- and he wondered, what was up with that.

referring to the Ponderosa's cook, bottle washer, butler etc Landon answered, "No, we weren't Gay. But, thank god, Hop Sing was."

in the late 80's (when a dollar was worth a Dollar) I was in line at a little outdoor to-go ice cream store in Poipou, Kauai, Hawaii (where Landon lived) and he had three of four little kids with him. when it was their turn they all got cones or whatever and Micheal tipped the guy a very healthy $20, putting a huge smile on the kid cashiers face.

he was one of the Good guys.
