The sheriffs comments are systemic racism in action. His sympathies are not something that would be extended to a person of color in the same place. That person wouldn't even be alive.

Actually, many people move to Seattle so that they can ski, hike, camp, and do any number of things outside that are literally impossible to do on public transit. Those of you who want to do noting more in life than work a the Stranger and sit in bars and coffeehouses on Capitol Hill (congratulating yourselves all the while for being so much cooler than the rest of us that you live on Capitol Hill) surely have no use for cars (and by the way, if being smug urbanites with disdain for those who don't live in your super-special Cap Hill neighborhood is what you are about, realize that you should probably move to Manhattan instead of our local low-rent substitute anyway).

Do people need HUGE cars? no. Do they need to drive them to work every day even thought they live on a bus line? Certainly not. Should they be running over pedestrians? I would argue this is not necessary or proper. There are any number of things wrong with our car culture, but for the foreseeable future they are gong to be with us in some form.

Would I like to see great train systems? Sure. Do I support the taxes to pay for them? Absolutely. Would they take care of everything people want to do in the outdoors? Nope.

You're not packing up the dogs and heading out backcountry skiing on the train. Or going to a trailhead 10 miles down a logging road. And you're not doing those things in a car share vehicle either. My point was just that there are valid reasons people drive here and we ought to be figuring out how to minimize the harm from it.

As every native or long-time Seattle resident knows: Fremont is the "Center of the Universe". That said, Capitol Hill has been a nightlife destination for decades, certainly longer than I've lived here. It's only the demographics that have changed in the past few years as the area has become more densely populated. Before it was mainly LGBTQA's and artists; now it's mostly coder-bros.
