As the article I linked admits, their financial problems predate and run far deeper than the pandemic. the PPE loan provided an excuse to get government funding for a failed business model that will either need to change, or go on the dole permanently, thus cementing their relationship with those in government.

It helps pay the salaries of tens of thousands, nay, even hundreds of thousands of scientists, engineers, technicians, fabricators, construction contractors, doctors, and other skilled workers, so they can own homes and cars, buy food and clothing for their families, pay for medical insurance and expenses. And all that doesn't even take into account the technological innovations to which you allude, that have made life easier, safer, and more productive for billions of people around the globe, even if they don't otherwise benefit from our investment in space exploration. So in a very real sense we're not "wasting" anything.
