Holy shit.

They found him guilty.

5

@1 - Just being dramatic again. It was a slam dunk, GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY.

7

Of course, his lawyers are most likely already preparing an appeal, so it ain't over til it's over and Chauvin is frog-marched into some maximum security prison where he'll no doubt have to spend many years segregated from the rest of the general population - but it's a good start.

8

Any lawyers or judges here have a good guess what's likely to happen at sentencing?

9

The correct verdict in light of the facts and the law.

10

Unless the jury was magically shown some exculpatory evidence that the rest of us are not aware of, or there was some kind of "all lives matter" stooge who had gotten on to the panel & was willing to hang it, this was the only conceivable verdict.

11

@2 - really? Have you been hiding under a rock through the whole trial?

14

Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!

It's a good 4/20.

Now, let's celebrate Justice but remember that it's just one event.

Tell anyone getting rowdy that rioting is disrespectful today.

15

Good. I am most interested in the sentencing. Maximum is supposedly 40 years (but is that total or per charge - no clue). This is exactly as it should be.

Now back to the work of getting cops to stop murdering Black people, to defund and defang the police, and to move toward dismantling all white supremacist ideology, policy, violence, and terrorism that created the system in which someone like Derek Chauvin felt absolutely nothing as he calmly and coldly sat on a man's neck for over 9 minutes (3 full minutes AFTER George Floyd was dead). And here's a shout out to Chauvin's other victims, too.

We can all only hope that Chauvin gets exactly what he deserves and it is as terrifying and painful as the last 10 minutes of George Floyd's life.

16

And all it took was multiple videos, a year of worldwide protests, and his fellow police finally speaking out against him.

It's a start. Now string up the rest of 'em.

17

Conservative bootlickers, do you ever get tired of being wrong? This last year and a half must've been exhausting. So much winning.

18

I wasn't quite as confident as 5, but I was pretty hopeful given that Chauvin's entire police department threw him under the bus (and rightly so).

20

@17: Wrong about what? Trump was never a conservative and conservatives don't want the police abridging citizens rights, much less their lives. "Conservative" is not the word you (not just you - most of the mainstream media) is looking for.

22

@20, good luck with that.

Whether you agree with the definition or not, Republicans have claimed the label of conservative. I know you aren't a Trump fan, but he was the end result of decades of Republican strategies, trying to gather both right wing religious conservatives and moderate fiscal conservative, along with a healthy dose of polite-sounding racist dog whistles, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia. Trump was all of that, amped up on narcissistic steroids and corruption. He was just a loud mouth and not as decorous as Moscow Mitch or Revisionist Boener on his book tour. Republicans encouraged and enabled Trump. At best, a few of them merely stood silently and watched as Trump tried to burn the county down and flush the constitution down the toilet.

Republicans have been enabling and backing police brutality for decades. They are totally fine with cops abridging citizens rights, so long as those citizens are brown or gay or female.

Own it.

23

@20: Nevertheless multiple things can be true at the same time. Are not the arguments about "liberal" and "progressive" twisted from their roots? e.g. I hear shade when those terms are applied to our current president.

Our political terminology should withstand corruptions of their meanings by current political trends.

25

23 refers to 22

26

@20... Yeah... instead of conservative.let's call it what it is.. head permanently stuck up ass. .. i.e., your usual spew

28

@22 is right on. Yes, modern Conservatives have nothing to do with actual Conservatism, but that's what they call themselves. And it’s who the Republicans think they are. They're now a "big tent" party that includes white supremacists, fascists, xenophobes, homophobes, 2A gun nuts, domestic terrorists, anti-American secessionists, Qultists, RWNJs, anti-education dipshits, and scared old people, to name a few.

I'm sorry for all of you old school, "principled" Reagan Conservatives (like Raindrop) looped in with these psychos, but it is what it is. You guys are now "leftists" to modern Republicans. Your party aided and abetted the worst among us, and then spent 4 decades propogandizing the decent right leaning folks into full on crazy people. Here we are.

Conservatives love to go into every goddamn thread on the internet and sing the praises of people like Chauvin and Rittenhouse, so we must take a moment to throw it in their faces when reality proves them wrong (which happens frequently). Enjoy!

Moments like these give me back a modicum of hope back that we might be able to move forward as a country.

29

@12- I certainly don't think this solves the problem or even shows that things have really changed all that much. But it's a start, and shows that maybe things will crack a bit. I was happy to see that some LE people were willing to testify & tell the truth instead of stonewalling to help Chauvin. So good news for now.

30

@19 - I'm confused. Are you saying that you have watched the whole trial, seen the testimony that the rest of us saw, and still think this is "political" and a "crucifixion"?

Now is a good time to pass SB-5134 in Washington: Hold Police Accountable, with Consequences.

Liberal and Conservative don't mean what most people think they mean.

Reagan was a neoliberal
Biden (and Obama and Clinton) are "third way neoliberals"

Somebody made a good call putting you on this beat, Jasmyne. It was powerful; real.
