RE: Supreme court to take up abortion case

If Roe v Wade were overturned, the republican party would lose a lot of single-issue voters, but more importantly, they'd lose a shitload of political donation dollars. The republican/fascist party knows this and so do their supreme court justices.

I just can't see them giving their voters what they want in exchange for a massive loss of money and power. I can't see them doing that.

The Palestinians deserve a better deal and better treatment. I don't know what will get this for them but firing rockets into Israel isn't going to do it.

I hope Melinda gets half of everything BillG owns.

4

@2 This all started when Israel confiscated Palestinian-owned land in East Jerusalem to give to Jewish settlers. When Palestinians protested, Israel did the equivalent of tear-gassing St. Peter's Square on Easter Sunday.

I don't support Hamas firing rockets at civilians, but the Israeli government is hardly the victim here.

6

That really is yucky and depressing about BillG.

@5 What are the reasons for such discrepancies in unemployment between Israelis and Palestinians? I dont know as much as I would like about this conflict but its easy to throw your hands up in frustration. Im just guessing here but I assume the actual economy of the gaza strip sucks but thats where Palastinians have to work while Israeli settlers are basically commuters living in gaza, but working in Israel. On a larger scale, does Isreal just freeze Palastine out of the global economy in general through trade wars/agrements? All of the above?

from: The U.S. Must Stop Being an
Apologist for the Netanyahu Government

But the fact of the matter is that Israel remains the one sovereign authority in the land of Israel and Palestine, and rather than preparing for peace and justice, it has been entrenching its unequal and undemocratic control.

Over more than a decade of his right-wing rule in Israel, Mr. Netanyahu has cultivated an increasingly intolerant and authoritarian type of racist nationalism.

In his frantic effort to stay in power and avoid prosecution for corruption, Mr. Netanyahu has legitimized these forces, including Itamar Ben Gvir and his extremist Jewish Power party, by bringing them into the government.

It is shocking and saddening that racist mobs that attack Palestinians on the streets of Jerusalem now have representation in its Knesset.

These dangerous trends are not unique to Israel. Around the world, in Europe, in Asia, in South America and here in the United States, we have seen the rise of similar authoritarian nationalist movements.

These movements exploit ethnic and racial hatreds in order to build power for a corrupt few rather than prosperity, justice and peace for the many. For the last four years, these movements had a friend in the White House.

At the same time, we are seeing the rise of a new generation of activists who want to build societies based on human needs and political equality.

We saw these activists in American streets last summer in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. We see them in Israel. We see them in the Palestinian territories.

With a new president, the United States now has the opportunity to develop a new approach to the world — one based on justice and democracy.

But if the United States is going to be a credible voice on human rights on the global stage, we must uphold international standards of human rights consistently, even when it’s politically difficult.

We must recognize that Palestinian rights matter. Palestinian lives matter.

The only thing of value is who you are with or without your money.

@10,

I find it depressing rather than fascinating. But I know what you mean.

Is the stranger Maga! We do not need private businesses using sidewalks . As a blind person in Columbia city, there is enough furniture already in the way on public sidewalks

@15,

Given that there wasn't anything even vague or tangentially related to "social constructs" posted, I've gotta say your obsession with the very notion is quite baffling. Though I'll indulge your trolling and request that you please cite an example of anyone, at anytime ever, stating that "everything is a social construct." Thanks in advance.

@9 there is a lot of unemployment in Gaza because there is hardly any industry because of the blockades and restrictions placed upon Gaza due to Hamas being recognized internationally as a terrorist organization. Israel controls the flow of goods and supplies in and out of Gaza.
Is it right that the whole of Palestine suffers for being under the rule of a terrorist organization? Not really, but this seems to be the reason Palestine does so poor economically.

Remember, you can't have a hot vax summer if you don't get fully vaccinated.

Sooner you do, sooner you can party!

@26 I've been to both Israel and the West Bank, back in 1992 when I/P tensions were probably about as low as they ever were. Two events really stuck with me:

Walking on a random street in East Jerusalem, we saw a single house on the block that was surrounded by razor wire. None of the other houses had anything like that. The tour guide said that a Jewish Israeli family had taken the house at gunpoint from the Palestinians who had lived there before, then put up razor wire to keep the family from taking it back. We asked why the police didn't evict them. Our guide just shrugged his shoulders. "They'd just come and retake the house anyway so there's no point."

We left a light on in the car and needed a jump start. We asked the parking attendant in the nice hotel we were staying at to call a tow truck to give us the jump. We saw the truck come to the parking lot entrance. Look at us, and leave. The parking attendant shrugged and said "Oh, you've got a [make of car]. Normally, only Arabs drive those, so it's no surprise the tow truck driver wouldn't serve you."

Agreed that the current situation is apartheid.

Since we are talking about Hamas, it was originally created by Mossad as a religious counterpoint to divide and conquer against the then-dominant and secular PLO.

Now Hamas has evolved into a political party with actual street cred because it actually helps people. A bit like the Black Panthers were. And, as both were and are perceived as legitimate, all the more threatening.
