What did the cops offer in explanation, when the cop-cameras clearly showed that no "random attack" took place? It's elementary that when a violent death occurs, possibly a crime, all the eye-witnesses from the scene are immediately interrogated by responsible authorities.
And while you're at it, release all those cop-camera videos to the public. Watching some videos couldn't possibly interfere with their "on-going investigation". The investigation could easily take place while the rest of us watched the videos.

That was nuts. I know there's standard "rules" to follow and that throwing to the first baseman immediately was probably one of those rules. But he sure fucked it up once he got the ball. What the hell was he doing so far in front of the base?? Once he got the ball, why didn't he run back to first base to out the batter, then immediately throw to home?? Or barring that, why didn't he run full speed at the batter instead of just approaching him slowly??? I mean, once he's that far in front of first, he has no other option but to tag him. What the hell was he thinking?!?

I've heard from people who are much more knowledgeable about the sport than I (which is, like, everyone) that first base is the easiest position to play, so often it's assigned to people who aren't very strategic or quick-thinking. That video seems to give more evidence to support that.

But let's be realistic about this for a moment. Policing in the US is seriously broken when it comes to fatal interactions with the public. There really isn't any need for the police to kill most if not all of the people that they do kill.
This is a product of the training, the "Warrior Cop" and "thin blue line" ethos where the police see themselves as separate and often in opposition to the civilians. Add in the gun culture of this country and it's not surprising that the police would develop this attitude that everyone is out to kill them and they have to shoot first.
Compare it to other developed countries that actually train their police more hours than hairstylists and it's obvious that we can and should do better. ...but we don't because too many people are fanatical about defending any action by the police as above question. If the trash collectors were killing people left and right we would have questions for them despite their essential service so why should the police be left to murder without even minimal accountability?

@11 - Unfortunately, even if US police had perfect training (training varies widely from one jurisdiction to another) and temperament, the number of people killed by police in the US would still lead all other advanced or even semi-advanced countries by a wide margin.

Why? Because we're the only country that has more firearms than people, some 400-million or so, including millions of assault rifles, that people can carry pretty much anywhere they like with either no restrictions or mostly minimal restrictions. As a consequence, there are over 2-million gun crimes each year in this country that we send cops to. No other advanced or even somewhat advanced country has to contend with that.

And contrary to the opinion of many here, cops often do interrupt gun crimes either in progress or wherein the suspect is in immediate flight from the crime and still armed. Surprisingly, a lot of these suspects realllly don't want to be caught. We don't read about these instances, because they are not outrages and usually do not involve fatal uses of force.

I'm not excusing misconduct, as I've been very vocal about the piss-poor lack of accountability in US policing, which may be getting a smidge better with these sorts of prosecutions, but the need for necessary police deadly force in our society isn't going away, not with our gun fetishist culture.

I say "necessary," as I believe in a necessity standard for use of deadly force as opposed to simply a justification one. Current law makes justification not such a high bar, but a "justified" shooting isn't always a necessary one. It often isn't, in fact. Still, even with that more restrictive standard, there will continue to be more than plenty of necessary uses of deadly force in our gun-crazy society. We may cut shootings in 1/2, but that would still leave hundreds yearly...thousands, if one counts non-fatal shootings.

Xina, I'm all in favor of disarming most American police officers, but even countries known for unarmed policing like the UK do have armed units with extra qualifications and training held in reserve for extreme situations.
