Here's hoping it's a lifetime ban.

2

@1 Brent for the WIN! Congrats on beating me to it. :)

3

@2: I'm willing to go a step further. Here's to a lifetime ban on RepubliKKKans. Period.

Yeah, I was gonna post something similar to @4, but then I'm also on record as thinking there was a good chance he'd not live out his first term. And I think once you reach a certain age lifestyle doesn't seem to have as much to do with it, and making it into your mid-late 90's or whatever is just kind of a crap shoot. I read a long New Yorker piece about aging a few months ago and it was really interesting, though I don't remember a lot of the specifics.

What if he did turn out to be one of those outliers though, and lived into his 100's? Could you imagine having to read about, and be regularly reminded of his utterly inane ramblings and vile existence for another 20 fucking years?

[shudder]

Here = that article.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/02/17/was-jeanne-calment-the-oldest-person-who-ever-lived-or-a-fraud

Focuses on whether or not the oldest woman who was ever to have recorded to live was actually her daughter, but also gets into a good amount of detail about the aging process in general and "super-centenarians," as I believe they're known. Recommended, if you're not averse to reading long form journalism online, which I personally loathe.

RE: student loan debt

So, like, what's predicted to happen if there is no student loan debt forgiveness at all, ever? Googling it gives no satisfactory answers.

If nobody does jack shit about student loans, what's the long term result?

9

@3 With the overlap in age between Republicans and Facebook users being about the same, they would loose way too many users.

10

@7 mike blob: I remember that article in The New Yorker. It was quite a biography. There has been some controversy, lately on if Jeanne Calmant, [b. Fenruary 21, 1875--d. August 4, 1997] of Arles, France, actually lived to 122 years and 164 days---or if the person in the photos is really her surviving daughter, Yvonne. Jeanne Calmant is said to have outlived both her daughter and grandson.

Maybe I missed it yesterday, but how in the hell did Slog miss the Dildrone, aka the flying Dong Copter?

@9: I would consider the loss of gullible RepubliKKKan followers, especially in mass quantities a good thing, Petey.

pretty meaty Schlog, Rich. thnx!

Finance Leaders Reach
Global Tax Deal to End
Shifting of Profits

Leaders of the world’s richest economies agreed to establish a global minimum tax, aiming to stop multinational companies from using tax havens.

The agreement reached by finance ministers from the Group of 7 nations would impose an additional tax on some of the largest multinational companies, forcing them to pay taxes to countries based on where goods or services are sold.

Our Seattle City Council somehow passed a pet bill that WASN'T immediately overturned by our courts for being blatantly and obviously illegal, or swiftly rejected by their own voters for being a humiliatingly stupid idea? The poor dears must be really upset about having their perfect record ruined -- just ruined! -- like that.

Luckily, Amazon should have little trouble showing our JumpStart Tax is punitive, given that CM Sawant has been calling it the "[Blame] Amazon Tax" for years. (Yes, the court can cite her words, even if voters have long since recalled her from office.)

It also appears the proprietors of Ye Cranky Olde Guys' Giant Time-Sucking Sinkhole of Conspiracy Theory understands they still might get sued (or even -- gasp! -- prosecuted) for Seditious Conspiracy, especially if they continue letting the very loud mouth on some failed real estate developer from Queens have unlimited access to their 'roided-up readership. (Why, it would appear that encouraging political extremism for profit in this century has turned out to be every bit as bad an idea as encouraging political extremism for political gain was in the last century. Nobody could have predicted...)

14

@2 Thanks! And @3 Agreed!

15

@14: You should also thank the Academy and your fellow nominees.

Transit notes: Link will run every 10 minutes in the middle of the day, not 12. So, they are making progress. It should run every 6 minutes all day long, but they are focused on mileage, not users.

Speaking of which, the Seattle Subway "vision" is not only unrealistic, it is anti-urban. It implies that we are like L. A., when we aren't. If you are going to spend billions improving transit in a city like Seattle, you should focus on the places where there are lots of riders, and the buses are too slow. Other than a small section of the East Side, this is entirely within the city of Seattle. It is sad that writers from a real newspaper take this group seriously when they write shit like this. It suggests that they don't know shit about transit.

Meh reactions from from the alt-right dailystormer site to Trump's speech in North Carolina on Saturday. I think what we see here is a slow brewing disillusionment with Trump. Maybe the fever is breaking. The site is too offensive to post a link. (It has an .su domain.) Here are the excerpts:

"Sure, it’s fun to see Donald Trump back on stage. But I don’t totally understand what the goal of this is. If the goal is actually to run in 2024 and just hope that after 4 years of total Democrat control of the government, the election system is more honest, then I think that is really stupid."

"What’s going to happen when Joe Biden starts a war with China, as the military is currently in the process of trying to do? Will Donald Trump back the war effort, and salute Biden for doing what needs to be done?"

"I just really don’t see how Trump is helpful to anything going on right now. He seems to simply want to put himself back at the center of attention by any means necessary, and yet he won’t really do anything to make that actually happen, apparently due to bad advice."

20

I'm not going to go look for clips of him but I have also read that he was slurring his words and that in referring to the trouble he had walking up a ramp on a sunny day last Summer he claimed the ramp was booby trapped and that it was rainy or something. He might have claimed that the rent was part of an ice rink or something also.

21

Sorry, ramp not rent.

The comparisons to this generation vs that generation on various metrics like wealth, home ownership, etc, are apples to oranges comparisons. The information age has changed everything and make the comparisons meaningless unless you factor in the 'wealth' derived from access to information and the ease at which tasks can be completed now vs 40 years ago. Productivity has gone through the roof. Kids have the opportunity to self teach themselves anything they want to know and have the drive to learn, something their parents couldn't have even dreamed of at their age.

23

@22,

Those various metrics are, for better or for worse, the most accessible gauges we have for assessing relative quality of life, which is what makes them meaningful. Of course it's noisy data, with various dynamic factors, but it's by no means irrelevant.

24

@11 - Here in Seattle, home of Blue Origin, we have much larger flying dildos to get excited about.

As to the eviction moratorium, I don't see this giant wave of evictions materializing. No landlord is going to go to the expense and hassle of evicting someone who got behind on the rent during the pandemic but is now paying it again. That makes no sense at all and there'd be no financial gain in it. Those who got behind and owe back rent, and are also NOT going to be paying the front rent now that the economy is back, are a different story. They are in the same position as those who don't pay the rent in non-pandemic times. Saying that rent is free anytime just because is very different from providing relief in extraordinary situations and the City needs to think long and hard before trying to make that happen.

And BTW, realtors already get taxed on the money they are paid for selling houses. It's called income. And the ones who are selling the big expensive houses, so are getting the big commissions, are paying lots of tax.

25

@18: It's offensive because its not an "alt-right" website. "Alt-right" is the self-applied euphemism for media-savvy neo-Nazis; the Daily Stormer is for full-throated American Nazis. You've been spending too much time deflecting for the world's worst monsters if you've lost sight of/didn't know that.

@22: Yeah, and those that don't have very little chance of actually accumulating any wealth. Unlike their parents, who only needed to work a semi-decent 40hr/week job to be comfortable. Now, you better be studying to be a computer programmer if you want the same timeline toward prosperity that they had.

26

@25: Oh please. That is really stupid Knat.

27

FREE HONG KONG!
And Taiwan

ignore the whines from the alt-white extremists

28

@27 - Couldn't agree more about Hong Kong. And Taiwan is already free. Let's hope they can keep it that way.
