"These Seattleites have been priced out of their homes for many reasons: losing their jobs, going into medical debt, or simply as a symptom of our refusal to build more homes across our city."

Andrew, substance abuse and mental health issues combine to present the leading self-reported causes of homlesness in our community. See https://kcrha.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Count-Us-In-2020-Final.pdf at p.30.

You fail to address those issues in any way. You yourself are therefore ignoring our current emergencies.

Huh, far fewer comments than Gonzalez or Farrell got for their op-eds. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.

@1: Those numbers comport closely with the City of Seattle's own survey of the homeless, back in 2016. (http://coshumaninterests-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/City-of-Seattle-Report-FINAL-with-4.11.17-additions.pdf) Then, 11% of homeless respondents said rental increase was the main cause of their becoming homeless; now 8% say this is true. So, what is Andrew Grant Houston's plan for the other ~90% of our homeless?

(Also, if an architect is advocating a public-housing plan, he needs to disclose his employment status, and his plans for recusal if he becomes mayor.)

@2 Even the author can't be bothered to comment and defend his position. What does that tell you?

@3 Yep, we've all known for some time know that substance abuse and mental health issues are a substantial factor leading to homelessness, and this is a growing problem. I've never understood why addressing those issues is not a priority for anyone involved in city leadership or homelessness response.
