New York City and California
to Require Vaccines or
Tests for Workers

The push to mandate coronavirus vaccinations amid sharply rising caseloads nationwide accelerated on Monday, as the country’s most populous state and its largest city both announced that they would require hundreds of thousands of government workers to get inoculations or face weekly testing.

At the same time, the Department of Veterans Affairs became the first federal agency to require such vaccinations, by announcing that all 115,000 of its frontline health care workers must receive a coronavirus inoculation in the next two months or face possible termination.

The actions by Gov. Gavin Newsom in California and Mayor Bill de Blasio in New York City reflected growing concern among many government officials that vaccine skepticism and the spread of the more contagious Delta variant could lead to a new wave of the pandemic.

Their orders would cover hundreds of thousands of government employees and, in the case of California, the more than two million health care workers in private and public hospitals, nursing homes and other congregate-care facilities, according to the state Department of Public Health.

That hydrant bit was straight out of Backdraft. Well done.

5

@2 Has it occurred to you that the only reason a lot of them are doing that shit is to watch you get mad about it?

6

Yep, we're headed into a second shit show. It's not enough these assholes (starting with Trump and all his Republican sycophants) murdered over 600,000 people in this country (400 children so far according to the CDC and the deaths of children, who cannot be vaccinated) will skyrocket with the Delta variant (watch and see how Republicans don't give a shit about dead kids either), we're now going to have to live through the deaths of possibly nearly one million more people - people who refused to believe in science and sickness and instead chose to listen to crazy fucktards.

I don't care how many are waking up right now (right before they die) and whose families are begging people to get vaccinated. The over 600,000 dead BEFORE YOUR FAMILY MEMBER DIED DIDN'T MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU. Republicans are freaking out because now they realize they successfully brainwashed their base so well that they are literally going to die. And they are going to kill who knows how many thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands more in addition to their own pathetic, unnecessary deaths.

I never imagined I would see the end of this country in my lifetime and it's happening. The people who are still living when this is over will be living in a fascist state, because Republicans have chosen to go full fascist rather than give up anything to anyone other than the wealthy, male, and white in this country. All with a Russian asset as their chosen Jim Jones. Unfuckingbelievable.

@4: Two smashed car windows, possible door reassembly, parts, labor, and fines. I'm guessing 4 to 5K.

9

@7 raindrop, insurance won't cover it if they were parked illegally, like next to a hydrant.

11

7 & 9,

Could be a lot more $. Those hoses are not dry, like a garden hose. A lot of them shed a fair amount of water. So in addition to the physical damage, there could be significant water damage, and fried electronics too, depending on how leaky that hose was inside the car. Fun times!

12

@8 Oh I'm hardly suggesting otherwise.

So go at 'em, sure, but... like, know what they feed on?

13

@5 Of course -- that's been obvious from the get-go. "Terrible shame about Grandma, but WE'VE GOT TO OWN THOSE LIBS!" I don't see your point, though. This is something any sensible person should be indignant over, especially the frontline docs and nurses who a few months ago had reason to think the worst of this nightmare was over. I wouldn't blame them if they all quit en masse. We do not deserve them.

14

Meanwhile in Canada, everyone is getting their shots, even the denialists in Alberta because Canadians are highly educated (no, seriously, true) and most don't buy into insane conspiracy theories like the German Queen and her family do ... oh, wait, I'm not supposed to admit that, sorry.

Anyway, they have 80% vaccination now, so just figure they're Seattle and have fun if you visit there in a week or two.

15

@11 The hoses sometimes leak from the couplings but it’s very unlikely that the interior of the car got soaked.

16

@15,

Any satisfying footage of you all taking out some windows to actually thread a hose? I spent five minutes searching youtube and only came across (lots of) boring-ass videos with images of still shots.

17

The wealthy have accomplished their goal of making cash-strapped conservatives and cash-strapped progressives fight each other.

Humanity is fucking doomed. But the wealthy will escape it all and live in the paradise the progressives and conservatives bought for them by fighting each other.

It's fucking humiliating. Every single one of us has been cuckolded by the wealthy.

Yes. You too.

21

well hang on Lucy 'cause
the Gov't's* about to
Mandate the vax.

*and Business

25

@23 The government can force EVERYONE to get vaccinated when the vaccines are fully approved by the FDA (and no longer in emergency status). The Supreme Court ruled so during smallpox - the ruling was NO, YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT NOT TO GET VACCINATED. PERIOD. FULL STOP. So as soon as the approvals are complete, everyone will can be forced to get vaccinated or be totally and completely shut out of society (fined, denied health care coverage, refused entry into any school, job, or business), etc. etc. etc.

People in this country do not have the freedumb to sicken and kill people, despite all of the anti-vaxxer bullshit that has run rampant in recent years (before the pandemic).

26

Massachusetts, 197 U.S. 11 (1905), was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld the authority of states to enforce compulsory vaccination laws.

27

@15 - Beat me to it. I've been on many a fire scene and never seen one of the large hoses leak...except where it actually attaches to the hydrant. We were present to prevent idiots in cars from driving over them.

@7 - Nah, less than 2K.

29

@28:

Maybe you'll do like your namesake and contract a case of syphilis; in which case we all hope you live a long, excruciatingly painful remainder of your existence.

30

@29 -- well
not All of us.

31

@3 kristofarian and @6, @25 & @26 xina: +4 Well said and summarized, both of you. Agreed and seconded. And thank you both for citing your sources.

@17 Urguthat Forka: I know. I keep thinking of the 2013 Jodie Foster film, Elysium.
No matter what I do to try to save money, or conserve resources, recycle, and even save gas by keeping my beloved VW stored seasonally during the inclement PNW fall and winter months, the entire GOP,, along with Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-Un, and fellow international terrorists remains hellbent on destroying this planet out of sheer selfishness, greed, and corruption.
RepubliKKKans are total shit for so willfully flushing the Earth and inhabitants down the toilet like this.
