" In 2010, Republicans enacted Project REDMAP, taking control of 20 legislative bodies across the country and rigging political maps to work in their favor, details The Guardian. Today, many Republican legislators are now in power because of that gerrymandering and could potentially bend redistricting to their will, queuing up a GOP takeover of the House in 2022. Fuck."

Yeah, while the left has been engaged in a circular firing squad for a decade over gender pronouns and calling people "Latinx" and shit, the right has made cold calculated efforts to perpetually rig the system of government in their favor. Well done everyone.

I like them just fine, but “Soccer Mommy” is just a horrible band name. It’s the kind of transitional name you come up with as a joke until you figure out what name you should actually have.

@2/@6 maybe this plays out a few swing districts/states but there isn't that many of those anymore and has this really tilted the balance of power in solid blue/red states? If anything WA has become more blue over the years with the 8th now in the hands of Dems. The Dems also have supermajorities in both the state house and senate here as well as control all key state positions from the gov down. What's our excuse then? Gerrymandering no doubt takes place but I think its influence is way overblown. This comes across more as excuses as why the Dems/Progressives have been unable to convince voters that their policies are good governance (see the current debate about the capitol gains tax for example).

Surf school guy probably shouldn't have married a serpent if he didn't want the kids to have serpent DNA.

A better band name would be Soccer Step-mom.

@8 The problem is that Democrats did a little pre-emptive disarmament and went for good government in a lot of states by enacting nonpartisan/bipartisan election commissions. In Washington, the Republicans basically get equal say in the redistricting lines, so the state ends up relatively fair, with roughly the same split in House seats as you see in statewide partisan elections. If we gerrymandered Washington as hard as Georgia, Texas, and Florida will gerrymander those states, the House delegation would be 9-1 or 10-0 Democrats. instead of 7-3.

The Democrats still gerrymander the heck out of Illinois and New York, but that doesn't offset the Republicans' gerrymandering in many states. NB I would be all for bipartisan redistricting as long as everyone or mostly everyone does it. I just don't like fighting with one hand tied behind my back.

The goal of every politician is to get re-elected. They will say and do whatever it takes to make that happen, no matter how immoral.

18

@2,6,8,15,

The more frightening thing is that republicans are just 3 legislations shy of having the power to call a constitutional convention and completely re-writing the constitution.

If that happens, it will truly be the end of the US.

They've already held mock conventions to design a new constitution (largely written by ALEC) and it completely and irreversibly hands over all power to the wealthy.

They only need three more states to vote in majority republican legislations and it's all over.

21

@2 BG, Repubs make you think that because that's what THEY talk about endlessly. Only the far left of the Dems do much of the circular firing squad that you suggest (see typical TS comment section).

Or do you mean that basic civil rights like using a bathroom (that aligns with one's gender) while out in public, or not being murdered by police for DWB is the kind of thing Dems should ignore?

Absolutely agree though that Dems are a total unmitigated disaster in political planning, messaging, and optics.

22

@8 D13R, gerrymandering works. It's proven, it's why tens of millions of dollars have been spent on state of the art analytics. A seat here, a seat there, it all adds up, and when Repubs are given an inch, they take a mile.

However, I agree on what's up with Washington state. We can't seem to do very much to move forward Dem positions, and Dems never explain why. I guess it's just sort of understood that the state Constitution apparently prevents any progress in most areas, and we apparently can't change the state constitution, so that's that.

29

@5 Agreed. When I was a kid growing up in the hard streets of Seattle, our bands had REAL names like Murder City Devils, the Blood Brothers, and Modest Mouse.

"I advise Blip and the rest
of the Reality Based Community"

whew!
close call!

anyway there's something about
WA where Dems outnumber 'repubs'
but when it comes to redistricting there's
parity. heard it on KUOW but need to locate...

35

This seems so much more serious than the Fnarf vs. Will in Seattle battles.

How did we come to this?
