her office can spin this any way they want, but bottom 6th percentile turnover says it all.

It’s like a grotesque morality tale: The Pied Piper of Shitheads - MAGAt Meets Karma.

"berated staff in front of others, demanded grueling hours, and maintained an office culture marked by constantly changing expectations and little tolerance for error, to the extent that some staffers sought therapy and questioned their careers in public service."

As well they should.

5

I guess all I can say this morning is, "You can't have your cake and eat it too."

6

"I don't think Biden knows how clones work"

I dont think Rich knows how figurative language works.

7

On-average in the U.S., there are roughly 10,600 home structure and outdoor fires involving bar-b-que grills every year (https://www.nfpa.org//-/media/Files/News-and-Research/Fire-statistics-and-reports/US-Fire-Problem/Fire-causes/osGrills.pdf), and yet people are shocked - SHOCKED, I TELL YOU! - when there's a fire at a homeless encampment where people have no choice but to use live flame for cooking and heating and where there's generally no source of running water with which to extinguish it.

But, I guess that's par for the course, since they can't figure out why there's always so much garbage and human waste at camps that lack both trash receptacles and toilets, let alone regularly scheduled disposal of said...

8

@6, yes, I was also baffled by Rich’s (I hope) deliberately obtuse comment on the “clone” thing.

10

Is any legitimate progressive goal furthered by tortured apologies for someone who is obviously running an abusive workplace.

13

@9: Marvelous response. As if a condescending line like "no choice but to use live flame" should negate alarm about fires out of control.

@10: brilliant

17

Maybe if Jayapal would spend less time pontificating on MSNBC and more time managing her office, maybe the environment there would improve. Not a week goes by that I don't see her on one of the evening analysis shows on MSNBC.

21

@14, The cops can respond to mental health calls, but they are prevented from using force, like handcuffing people. This poses a problem for involuntary commitments. Reading the crosscut article, it does seem like the cops are showing up in every example given, just that they are leaving without taking the person in crisis to a hospital. The statistic given, that there has been a 45% drop in people involuntarily committed by the SPD reflects this.

I actually think the SPD leadership is correct here. Even Sen. Pedersen seems to indicate the bill was intentionally vague about involuntary commitments so it wouldn't open up a window for the police to abuse.

22

I don't trust Buzzfeed's reporting on much of anything, but I also think we should be skeptical consumers of any statements coming out of a politician's office. I do trust The Stranger's reporting though, and I would love to see our hometown paper publish a longer piece about the allegations. I trust The Stranger's reporters to be attentive to both the racist and sexist double standards that women of color in positions of power face while also not being afraid to call a local politician to account for conduct and policies that are inconsistent with the reasons we elected them in the first place. I'm thankful we live in a city that has a strong local newspaper and the journalistic talent to thoughtfully cover issues like this.

23

@9:

Apparently enough that every summer SFD has to issue safety advisories (https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WASEATTLE/bulletins/286573c), and the County has to implement burn bans (https://kingcounty.gov/depts/local-services/news/2021/20210623-fire-safety-burn-ban.aspx) in order to remind bubba not to torch his house or apartment complex while grilling - and let's not even get started on fireworks - which the local bubbas invariably ignore, cuz MAH FREEDUMBZ!

27

@9:

And in case it bears repeating - with your kind that's generally a sure bet - the bubbas have a virtually unlimited source of running water right OUTSIDE of their homes and apartment buildings and they STILL manage to burn shit down every fucking summer...

28

@26:

Are there any BIPOC/women in your office? Maybe you should ask them how they feel about this...

33

@30:

To paraphrase, the late, great Yogi Berra, "Nobody wants to live in Seattle - it's too popular."

But seriously, I'm in complete agreement: why would anyone IN Seattle give a single fuck about what the credulous, slack-jawed yokels who live in Outer Dumbfuckistan think of us? Because, when people like @16 trot out vacuous phrases like "THE NATION", that's usually to whom they're referring...

34

@31:

Or maybe just get ON meds, period.

35

"...[I]f you're in California, then vote Newsom."

Technically speaking, one cannot vote for Newsom. One cannot vote for Newsom even if he is removed. He becomes ineligible if "yes" wins.

One must vote "NO" if one wants Newsom to remain in office.

So, Californians, please vote NO.

38

@37 ST2, perfectly said. I was about to write virtually the same thing, right down to the the comparison of why we don't hear more about the toxic work environments of Repubs.

39

@37: Good points. In regard to the high stress of a congressional office, in comparison, the staff over at the Patty and Maria Senate offices are probably bored out of their minds.

40

As to the clone issue, apparently Black is the new Orange.

On the trash in the camps subject, the campers all have a) time in their hands and b) shopping carts. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask that they haul their trash to the public garbage cans located throughout the parks they have taken over.

41

Maria Cantwell has been included on several "Worst Bosses in DC" type lists as well.

42

@17 Buck, it's a good thing that she does. We need way more Dems out messaging and creating the narrative rather than always defending themselves from the Repub narrative, which is the nation's playbook. Everything is about reacting to Repubs.

What the fuck do Murray and Cantwell do? Really, what the fuck do they do? I would vote them the fuck out of office, but they're each going to be there until they're 80 years old. We have two Dem female senators representing one of the largest economic engine states in the nation, the state of Washington is absent in the political discourse of our nation. It's such a missed opportunity. At least we have Inslee.

43

@36 Michael, along the same lines, Jayapal did not hand the election to Trump. She may have timed what she said poorly, but she had zero effect on the election.

Hilary handed the election to Trump. While I respect her for a lot of things, she was a terrible candidate who should have never been nominated. She ran a terrible campaign. She acted as though she had learned nothing from 25 years in national politics.

Democrats handed the election to Trump. They nominated Hilary, a terrible candidate.

James Comey handed the election to Trump... I needn't say more.

The MSM handed the election to Trump... I needn't say more.

50+ million American dumbfucks handed the election to Trump. They voted for that piece of shit, and anyone with half a brain could see that. And then they doubled down in 2020 with another 70+ million votes.

44

comte trying to say only rednecks like fireworks and grilled meat is kind of a weird flex, but OK. they are right that homeowners are also responsible for many fires.
good job comte, go take a bong rip and simma down.

50

@46,

Hey, I don't live in Seattle and absolutely LOVE me a good joke! Can you provide a link to some of these hilarious hijinks so that I can laugh along with you? Please?

51

@40:

If a typical family on average can fill a 30 gallon trash receptacle every week, how many do you think a group of homeless people can fill, given they don't have the option to sort recyclables or compost and given most park containers are usually filled to overflowing with fast food containers and bags of dog shit already, and Parks & Rec is understaffed and doesn't have the capacity to empty the handful of them in each park several times a week, as it is?

52

@44:

Rednecks live in cities, too, you know, and anyone who can't start a fire without using a half container of lighter fluid - or who just likes to see a ten foot fireball erupt from their 22* Weber charcoal grill - probably fits that description.

53

On Jayapal: there are very few exceptional leaders & managers in existence - PERIOD. She was not voted in due to her skills as a boss, but her skill in campaigning. Yawn - just another crappy boss, of which there are many. A tiny minority of people in these positions excel at getting things done AND having good people skills. On DC salaries: my job has me researching various professional salaries across the US - you'd be surprised at low prevailing wages are in DC for all professions, given its high cost of living.

54

@22 - you forgot the /s

55

@53 - there’s no arguing with the turnover rate.

57

@9 I don’t have stats but structure fires originating from a bbq are not very common.

Fires with a nexus to the homeless population are widespread enough that a new ad-hoc attempt is being made to identify them. The normal reporting system (NFIRS) used for documenting fires does not lend itself to doing so.

58

@37
Yes, women are called bitchy, while men are called assertive. (Just as assertive white QBs are called competitive, and assertive Black QBs are derided for not being team players.)
And Yes, Trump was a psychotic asshole to work for - but, hey, everyone got a book deal, so it's all ok.

59

@51 - we're paying to have people periodically clean the trash out of the parks now. Having it all at least in one place at the trash cans would make it a lot easier, no? Seems like asking the campers to do that small a thing to help is not out of line. And I would guess that the average camper doesn't pile up nearly as much as the average family - I am sure they buy less Amazon crap. You are, however, the one with the trash can in your avatar, so perhaps you are on to something.

61

@30: "...but the entire PNW is functionally a coastal extension of flyover country..."

And yet, here you are, commenting thousands of times on events in "flyover country." Frisco area must be duller than I thought.

@56: Rape fantasy, or wish fulfillment? Must we choose?

@57, @59: As far as COMTE knows, not a one of those ~750 fires had anything to do with cooking meth'. Nope, no way, no how, just move along...

62

@57:

Go check out my comment @7 and follow the link. Then come back and apologize for being a dumbass who spews shit out of their ass without bothering to check to see if the shit has any connection to reality.

63

@59:

Again, compare the size of a few scattered 30 gallon trash cans that are already mostly filled with homed people's park trash, and then calculate how much trash 20 or 30 people in an encampment can generate every week when they don't have any other means of disposing of literally EVERYTHING the rest of us normally toss away, and THEN factor in how infrequently P&R actually comes around to empty said trash bins, and you'll arrive at an answer that makes this proposal completely ridiculous on its face.

Now, if the City would park a couple of commercial grade 4 yard dumpsters at encampments and then actually empty them every week, that might come a fair means closer to solving the problem.

64

@63: Now, if the City would sweep each encampment, every time, that would solve the problem.

65

@63 - so what you're saying is that, because the City has a hard time keeping up with the volume, that the campers are completely justified in just dumping all their garbage, other crap, literal crap, etc. wherever they want? And you wonder why a lot of people want the camps booted? The ones that are kept pretty clean (e.g., much of Woodland Park) are way less of an irritation to the neighborhood than the freeway garbage dumps, for example.

And yes, if paying for some dumpsters is what it will take, I'm all for it.

66

Wow, the Prof is now using homophobic tropes to insult fellow posters. It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for him.

67

Being bitch or assertive as a man/woman really has nothing to do with how you treat people. You can be aggressive, demanding, even high maintenance but its no excuse to shit on people who are working for you and treat them poorly. Sometimes an asshole is an asshole whether you're a man or a woman. What I'm getting out of this article is that Rep Jayapal doesn't believe in common courtesy for those that are beneath her and that is how you have a toxic workplace. It's not like its going to impact her re-election chances in the slightest though. Remember her predecessor paid a million dollar fine for illegally recording a member of congress and voters in Seattle were like yeah, love that shit.

69

@16, @18, @19, @46 a, and @68 OrangeDumbass and @66 & @67 District13dumpsterfire: Run along, lil MAGA trolls.

70

@62 Per the NFPA there were 1,291,500 fires nationwide in 2019 and according to the PDF you linked, there were an average of 4900 bbq fires in or around structures the 5 years preceding.

https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Data-research-and-tools/US-Fire-Problem/Fire-loss-in-the-United-States

That’s .37%. That’s uncommon. Go comment on a subject you actually know. This isn’t it.

71

@69: Nothing MAGA related going on here silly idiot. Maybe start actually reading before you belch?

72

lol what in the actual fuck did I just read. turn off your fucking internet, prof. fucking cringe-fest. good lord.

73

comte coming in with the weird flex that only rednecks eat meat and enjoy fireworks, but they are not wrong that homeowners also start fires.
simmer the fuck down now and go rip a bong before your head explodes. you been hanging out with prof too much.

74

This thread got so bad even the herpes doctor declined to post.

75

@67: If you're going to Drudge up (ha!) something from twenty-plus years ago, at least get your lone fact right. Then-Rep. Jim McDermott never recorded any other member of congress. The persons who did confess to having done so walked away after getting their wrists lightly slapped; this was the 'tell' for how serious the entire kerfuffle really wasn't.

To the extent it may have been a failed attempt at a right-wing ratfuck of McDermott, it failed because we voters gleefully ignored it, much to the dismay of persons who'd bought the entire ludicrous story and were now stuck with it. Sorry to read you're still one of those folks.
