I drive a car. I use lights when it's dark. Am I really that bad?

2

"What do you think Ann Davidson’s inevitable AM radio talk show will be called?"

Forgive me for being a spelling fascist, but her name is Ann Davison. I'm guessing this was an honest mistake, or maybe we've entered the stage of the campaign where it is too much of a concession to even spell the opposing candidate's name correctly.

And about that headline: "Yaaas Democrats Give Us More Nothing." Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that Republicans together with two Democratic senators are looking to get nothing done? Or is The Stranger now joining in with the mainstream media in the meme that if Democrats can't get anything done because there aren't enough Democrats then that should serve as a signal that there need to be even fewer Democrats?

Phoebe @1, I think the general theme here is to present such a purist and off-putting vision of progressivism and environmentalism so as to drive people away from it. Or maybe all this is being intended as satire.

3

Just to put a little perspective on my comment @2. I think I always have to remind myself, the more incendiary the post, the more it drives engagement. If Slog writers tried to be perfectly reasonable like the now-departing New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, the clicks would dry up.

4

Highways will also bring you food and goods to allow you to continue to be pretentious and condescending without having to actually get your hands dirty, transport life saving medicines so millions more people won't die from Covid and generally allow people to interact with others outside their idealogical bubble. Maybe someday TS writers will try that as well.

5

That Geekwire article on Bellevue really is hilarious. “Tent-free sidewalks”? Like anyone enjoys using those sidewalks. Might as well take a stroll along I-5. The whole city (if you can call it that) has the personality of a Sears parking lot from 1987.

6

We place restrictions on the first (and other) amendment all the time. Dont yell fire in a theater. Dont be a fucking nazi. Seems pretty simple.

8

Supporting Trump then asserting that you can either tweet or be a leader is a bold, if confusing, move.

Walking to lunch places when I worked in downtown Bellevue was always simultaneously long, loud, and lonely, due to the vast plains of concrete between buildings, all the car noise, and the notable absence of more than a couple dozen humans on the sidewalks respectively.

9

@1 I've pretty much stopped trying to do my part. It's pointless if we are going to continue to let corporations run roughshod over the planet.

I'm tired of hearing shit like "you're using your lights wrong, you're wiping your ass wrong, dont use AC, dont drive. Recycling matters."

I'm out. I'm going to live my life in comfort and convenience because there are fewer and fewer pleasures in this increasingly miserable world.

Wake me up when the green new deal passes and China and India and Russia and the US get reigned in. Maybe then I'll start composting again.

10

@7 just because it is protected doesnt mean it has be is my point. Besides, Garlands still stuck in battered wife third way land where if we just compromise with the nazis a little more, they will see reason. He can he wrong too.

14

@8:

Seriously, I've seen more people on the sidewalks in Phoenix when the temperatures are hovering around 105 degrees.

As for Davison complaining about Thomas-Kennedy's tweets, well, people and glass houses:

https://publicola.com/2021/10/27/the-other-city-attorney-candidates-radical-tweets/

And seriously, check out "As The Earth Turns" (available on various platforms.) It's very heavily influenced by the seminal 1936 British production of H.G. Wells' "Things To Come" - right down to the title graphics and Lyford's character's clear resemblance to Raymond Massey's Oswald Cabal - but for a 20 year old kid in what then was pretty much the middle of nowhere, it's a remarkably ambitious and fully realized film. Plus, the new musical score by Ed Hartman is simply gorgeous!

15

How the hell do you bemoan climate change and celebrate animal agriculture - which causes more climate change than our cars or lightbulbs - in the same breath without completely collapsing under the weight of your own blinding hypocrisy & rank ignorance?

19

The ad is actually very effective. NTK is unfit for the office she is trying to occupy. What a nightmare.

20

@17, if you read oldwhiteguy's comment carefully, you may discover that he already answered your question.

23

@11 I believe that the defense has to demonstrate that the people shot were looters or arsonists before they can be described as such.

24

Even in its diminished form, this legislation is better than anything Obama ever signed when he had 60 votes in the Senate.

The problem going forward is that a generation from now the Senate will be controlled by maybe 25% of the national vote because of the wisdom of the founders.

25

It's true that Bellevue is not the new Seattle. Bellevue is not a festering zombie-addict homeless zone as Seattle has become. Shoplift in Bellevue and get arrested.

26

@16 @17: Bernie Sanders swept West Virginia in the 2016 Democratic primary. So I don't think the only options for representing that state are down to a yellow dog coal baron or a trumplican.

28

@26, and Manchin got like 70% of the votes against his last primary challenger

29

*who ran as the progressive candidate

31

@4 trains would be a much safer and more energy efficient way to deliver goods between cities. We would only have needed trucks on the last mile.
Not that big railroad would be friendlier corporate citizens than big auto. It's just the physics of rail vs trucks.
I work in logistics so I'm familiar with the needs of commerce and the vast mountains of things we ship over incredible distances. But there's no need for the vast amounts of waste in our infrastructure either.

35

@28 while I don't know the details, I'd throw a wager that Schumer, Pelosi & the rest of the DNC types supported Manchin against this unknown progressive of unknown talents. They always prefer to lose to the right than lose to the left.
It's been said that if they didn't have the Republicans the Democrats would have to invent them: thus Manchin and Sinema.

36

@33: how many flu patients only survive via the ICU and a ventalator? Or have on going symptoms months after wards?

I've had several of my less educated, unvaccinated co-workers DIE from covid and others only survive after weeks or even months out.

Really done with flu comparisons since last year.

39

Tech moving to Bellevue would solve a lot of problems. The concentration of highly compensated individuals in Seattle is the root of evil heretofore bemoaned by the Stranger. Rents, general cost of living would go down. No more greedy corporate interests to get in our way! Watsons “Lesser Seattle” approach was on to something.

40

@37:

Unlike Manchin himself, who, were he to run for office in any solidly blue state, would have no choice but to do so as a Republican...

41

@3 Cressona, "I think I always have to remind myself, the more incendiary the post, the more it drives engagement. If Slog writers tried to be perfectly reasonable like the now-departing New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, the clicks would dry up."

Indeed. But it's a mistake to compare the Slog writers to news journalists. They share as much in common with Kristof as the Fox & Friends crew does. That's a more apt comparison. The Left's version of Fox & Friends.

And I think it's gotten to the point where it's backfiring on them - they've leaned so far into crazy-land, they're losing more and more of the audience.

Folks, The Stranger is not any more a legitimate news site than Fox News is. It's a political activism blog. There is no journalistic integrity involved here.

43

@32, oh, they will be "on trial", since Rittenhouse will use a self-defense strategy, and smearing Rosenbaum, Huber, and Grosskreutz (the way you just did) will be essential to it.

not that it will matter, because Jury Nullification only takes one Gundamentalist RW asshole to get a mistrial, just like it did for Elizabeth Hokoana.

looks like you already decided they deserved death. they didn't.

44

@2 cressona, "I think the general theme here is to present such a purist and off-putting vision of progressivism and environmentalism so as to drive people away from it."

Very well said.

I drive a hybrid compact, but after reading Matt & the gang's increasingly bonkers diatribes on cars and roads, it makes me want to go out and buy a Humvee and park it outside his apartment and leave the engine running all day just to spite the dumbass.

45

@25, granted Bellevue doesn't have the homeless we have, but it also doesn't have any alternative music clubs like Neumos, El Corazon, or the Sunset Tavern. Culturally, the Eastside has a bit of a stick up its butt.

@39, I'm not all that sure rents would go down if more tech relocated to Bellevue. Developers don't see any profit in building for and renting to lower income people. There would have to be massive government intervention/subsidies for lower income housing to be constructed and or made available.

46

All manner of strident biases on display in the AM roundup today. Very brave, Matt.

50

Manchin is a dick. Why is a senator from WV able to destroy so much? OH RIGHT BECAUSE 50 REPUBLICANS ARE ALSO IN THE SENATE AND THEY'RE JUST SITTING BACK DOING NOTHING AND RECEIVING NO MEDIA COVERAGE. Let's get real people. Manchin and Sinema are Republicans who duped Democrats into voting for them. The other 50 Republicans are responsible for destroying anything and everything Biden's administration wants to get done, too, as they have been doing for decades and decades.

The fact that the media refuses to tell the entire story is bullshit. McConnell and his GOP cronies are the problem. The 149 sedition supporting members of Congress are the problem. Trump still walking the earth free is the problem. Etc. Etc. Etc.

52

@47 "Without a trial, they may be referred to as "rioters" and "looters" under the Judges ruling."

No. You don't seem to understand how motions in limine work (to be fair, I don't get the impression any of the other commenters do either). The judge merely declined to rule, in advance of trial, that the defense was prohibited from using the terms "rioters" or "looters" to refer to the victims. The judge did not rule that the defense could freely use those terms either, he merely left the possibility open. The judge's decision is based on the reasoning that the defense should be allowed to use those terms if they establish that the victims were, in fact, engaged in rioting or looting:

"Let the evidence show what the evidence shows, that any or one of these people were engaged in arson, rioting or looting, then I'm not going to tell the defense they can't call them that," Kenosha County Circuit Judge Bruce Schroeder said during the pre-trial hearing.

55

@49,

Hi, the topic at hand isn't local, but national. Slog has long since enjoyed a national (international even!) readership and if you're not comfortable w/ non-locals weighing in on matters of discussion (both regional and national) you should consider finding some other blog to read and comment on.

57

Somebody needs a hug.

59

@53 -- The problem is us, and an antiquated system that is undemocratic. Some votes are just a lot more valuable than others. Votes in small states, and thus White votes carry more power. Just bad luck I guess, but completely unfair. Make DC a state, along with Puerto Rico, and we would make a dent in the problem. While we are at it, how about one Dakota (do we really need two?) and make Maine part of Massachusetts again. When the overwhelming majority of people vote for one party, the representatives should represent that.

The big problem with Manchin is that he is wrong from a political standpoint. He thinks the old rules apply. He is still pushing for decorum, and a moderate middle, while the other side has moved beyond all that. He thinks that he will be rewarded, both with civility in the Senate, and politically, in West Virginia. He is delusional. The Republicans will crush him, and every last Democratic principle if they take power. The only hope is to actually provide something of value to voters so that they believe Democrats can get shit done. Otherwise the Republicans will simply win elections by suppressing the vote and appealing to White angst (wouldn't be the first time).

60

@18 blip and @50 xina for the tellin' it like it is WIN, BAYBEE!!!!

@59 Ross: We really do need to kill the filibuster, insurrection, gerrymandering, redistricting, and of course, the grossly outdated Electoral College. Enforcing RepubliKKKan term limits in the Senate, House, and Congress and adding 5 more actual US Supreme Court Justices during Biden's time in office couldn't hurt, either. I understand that Smokin' Joe is considering appointing his former CO, Former President Barack Obama as a possibility to SCOTUS.

61

@51 & @56 Simpleton and @58 Sir Troll II: And yet you MAGA rubes are both still here, babbling as usual. Where would you be without The Stranger to inform you of what's really going on? Go get some fresh air or take a nap before you fall face down onto your keyboards.

62

@25: Who gets top bunk in the tree fort tonight, Swifty, you or Elmer?

63

@48: I'm openly biased against misinformation-spewing plague rats. Namely, you.

64

Has anybody seen or heard from kristofarian lately?

65

@63 Knat: Agreed and seconded.

66

Good Lord, what a pathetic immature nuisance she is.

67

@66: Oh, you almost had it, Elmer! It's Good Lord, what a pathetic immature nuisance you are. When in doubt look in your bathroom mirror, ya ultra maroon.
Be careful not to let the rubber cement leaking from your ears harden. You could take a nasty fall and crash land face forward onto your keyboard.

68

@67: I was referring to Lorena Gonzalez!

69

@68: Uh-huh. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And I've got a deed to the Deception Pass Bridge.
