Face tattoos are eventually regretted. Poor dear.

3

@2 Well put.

4

Very true, @2

5

@2:

I doubt they'll regret it any more than guys regretted getting ear piercings in the 1980's. By the time they get to be old enough to be in mid-level positions, assuming that's even something they aspire to - which is doubtful - most of their peers will be sporting ink on some part of their bodies anyway, so it just won't be that big of a deal. Cultural norms and fashions change - men of a certain status used to wear powdered wigs and frilly collars, but they don't anymore. I mean, do you think people are really going to want to give up wearing "soft" pants when they're forced to head back to the office in 2022 or '23?

@1: It's always impressive when you're so upfront with your ignorance.

10

Probably one of the stupidest, seemingly intentionally ignorant comments I’ve ever seen from Raindrip. That it’s done in so few words is almost impressive.

11

Republican votes are eventually regretted!
Happy New Year to everyone!

13

@1: Fair points, I replace "eventually" with "often" to soften the blemish of my faux pas.

14

@1 is probably thinking of that dude that got a Romney tattoo on the side of his face a few years back, about a month before Romney lost. That had to have been a VERY regrettable tattoo.

15

Implying that the Dave Chappelle show is canceled is pretty shady. Are you guys supposed to be news or something?

16

woke snow is trying to cancel Dave Chappelle!

17

@13 I'm truly impressed at the depths of your incuriousness and your truly spectacular ability to edit something to "soften the blemish of [your] faux pas" while also making it worse.

Holy cripes, man. It's a culturally significant tattoo in a culture that you don't belong to. While YOU might regret getting that tattoo (and you probably should if you did), why on earth would you think that someone from that culture would regret it at any time?

18

@14,

Yeah, he may even be speaking from experience. Is it possible Raindrop IS the Romney face tattoo guy?!?

19

As someone who has traveled to New Zealand and experienced Maori dance, music and culture, I understand what #1 can never understand living in his bubble. These people are generally unreachable.

20

@15: That is pretty crappy, considering arts and entertainment coverage is a key asset for The Stranger.

@17: Calm down with your pearl clutching over superlatives and generalizations. Ever read xina?

@18: That face was a millennial. The regret lies in that Romney lost, paving the way for Trump to take over the the GOP.

21

To clarify, folks with the mentality of #1 are generally unreachable through debate. They would have to have a life changing experience to change their mentality.

23

@19: Cultures are their own bubbles, are they not?

24

Raindrop @1, how to show your ignorance. This is not any old face tattoo, it is culturally significant to the First Nations people of New Zealand.
Do some research before showing your lack of cultural knowledge about places which are not Seattle.

26

@24 see @13.

27

New Zealand is a beautiful country. Not that I think anyone can go there, being extra covid safe. Just watch the ferry from Nth or Sth Island, travelling thru this beautiful fiord , then hit the ocean & it can be treacherous.
So close to Australia & such a different place. Not the best sand, though. Stony beaches.
Earthquake off Darwin, Nth Aust. yesterday, a 7, nobody / things hurt. For those keeping an eye on recent earthquakes.

28

@20 Sure, I read xina's comments. And I usually avoid superlatives. I make an exception where they're justified.

But go on in your world where the rules of civility and seeking common understanding apply to everybody but you. It must be very cozy for you to never have to challenge a preconceived notion. I mean, imagine what kind of slippery slope it would be to try to envision someone else's culture? It might change your worldview forever. The horror.

29

Oh ok, raindrop. Is that an apology? Great.
It is important to apologise when having made mistakes/ hurt people/ shoot off at the mouth before thinking.

30

@28: I suggest going easy on pontificating about cultures - it tends to be a slippery slope in itself. In addition, the world is also a melting pot.

31

@29: I'm waiting for auntie grizelda to pile on to post the formal version.

32

@22:

It wasn't too long ago that having ANY ink, regardless of whether it was visible or not, would have sent your resume into the round-file; today, it's so common as to not even be an issue. I've seen bank tellers, cashiers, ticket agents, food servers, bartenders (and not just at divey hipster establishments), mechanics, engineers, postal workers, sales people, lawyers, accountants - all manner of public-facing employees, many of whom I'm pretty sure earn far better than minimum wage - sporting visible tats, and nobody blinks an eye at it anymore. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find out that even hard-core, button-collar, suit-and-tie types have them; like I said, cultural norms DO change and what was once considered outré is now just normal.

Maybe you're just old and being left behind eating the dust of the New Generation as it marches collectively forward into whatever future is in-store for them - it happens.

And while we're at it, your snarky remark @25 sounds about on-par with whatever it was @1 (Braindrip, I presume) must have typed. Skin markings have been around for over 5,000 years: the oldest so far pegged at around 5,200 years found on the remains of a mummified "ice man" discovered in the Austrian Alps in 1991 (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/tattoos-144038580/).

So, no, it's not "cultural appropriation" to adopt something that has been practiced by myriad cultures, spanning literally every continent, for thousands of years.

34

TIL that anything done in your youth, as long as it is culturally significant, is NEVER, EVER regretted. Ever. Don't even dare suggest it. People that do such thing never change, ever, and all actions taken decades ago (as long as they are 'cultural') will always stand the test of time.

Including Germans. I should have done more culturally significant German things in my youth.

38

@31: No thanks, Elmer. You're already embarrassing yourself just fine. Got any New Year's resolutions? Do everyone a big favor in 2022 by knowing when to quit before you've made a complete ass of yourself.

39

@33: Thank you.

40

All tattoos are essentially fashion statements that people use to adorn themselves. If not all reactions get praise, and some are even disgust, that's nothing to apologize for.

QED

41

@39 & @40: It's a new day, a new month, and a new year and you STILL haven't learned a damn thing, Elmer. Now run along before some QAnon goon comes gunning for you for shooting your mouth off and "accidentally" blowing up Swifty's precious AR-15 arsenal.
You must be Reason #1 as to why flammable cargo is prohibited on SR 520 and on I-90, according to WSDOT. Even your favorite pearl-clutchers fear you at this point. That's nothing to be proud of.
Start 2022 constructively with a nice long nap----say, for about 30 years.

42

Stop being so grizzled. You'll get wrinkles.
