Bishop Tutu was wise;
"For he sees that even the wise die, the fool and the stupid must both perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their graves are their homes forever" Psalm 49

Why do we keep praising Light Rail as some Great Universal Savior?

It's useless to the majority of the city. Living in the center of Seattle, right by the Fremont Bridge, the closest station is at least 20 - 30 minutes away by bus. An hour or more when there's snow. For me, the savior was the spiky dealies you strap to your hiking boots because I still had to make it to the bus.

If you live on the one, single, line, great. But for the rest of us, Light Rail is something we use once every few months when the planets align.

And yes, I do get that they had to start somewhere, and that line was likely the best place to start. Very much looking forward to there being additional lines in 2071.

A pine casket is a clever use of cheap optics for the departed.

4

@3 raindrop I often enough don't agree with you but I usually at least understand your point. But this time I'm not sure where you are going with your comment. What exactly is clever?

5

@4: Could be 'frugal' or 'efficient' rather than clever, meaning reaping a gain in symbolism of having humble virtues simply by going with a conspicuously non-opulent pine box casket.

7

@6 I totally agree that rail-based transit can be a great savior. NYC's subway is amazing in how it stitches the city together. BART is pretty good as well.

It's frustrating how Sound Transit added three new stations, all still on the same north-south line that's inaccessible for most of the city, and people and publications are acting like Seattle suddenly has great train transit. For most of the city, getting around by transit during a snowstorm still involves slipping and sliding on unshoveled sidewalks and unplowed residential roads to make it to one of the few bus lines that isn't canceled so you can wait for an hour or more for whatever random bus happens along.

I doubt West Seattle will ever have light rail (that neighborhood is so intensely car-centric), but I think Ballard and Interbay and LQA will, just far off in the future.

Happy to see Russ go, funding his salary has ruined the rest of the team.

9

I'm not even a Boba fan, but that review was overly harsh, seemingly so just to get attention.

The first episode was that bad.

10

@8: somehow other teams pay their QBs as much, if not more, and thrive - i.e. Brady, Rodgers. I think it's more likely Wagner and his bloated LB salary will depart, as KJ Wright did this year. and Carroll will retire.

This year was lost to Wilson's broken finger: 3 games missed, and the several games after it that he shouldn't have started.

11

oh please, if light rail ran thru your neighborhoods on the surface like it does in Rainier, you'd be whining about that.

It is what it is.

@11

Nope, I'd be jazzed af if Light Rail ran through my neighborhood above ground. I'm sure the NIMBYism of Fremont/Northern QA would lose their utter minds over such an idea, but I'd definitely support it.

That said, running underground is better for a myriad of reasons. And the fact that Sound Transit stuck the Light Rail above ground in what are generally poorer, less white, neighborhoods, while it goes below ground in the richer, whiter ones, is exactly who Seattle is with the "it is what it is" approach to infrastructure.
