I'd say it's early days on City Attorney Ann Davison. She really hasn't done anything one way or another yet.

3

As gun sales in Washington have risen astronomically over the last couple years, so too have shootings.
If there were journalists or at least logically thinking individuals they will know that correlation does not imply causation.

4

Rich Smith gives us a long meditation on Harrell, cops, & public safety, bemoaning "Seattle isn't focused on 're-imagining' policing anymore," keeping the discussion cartoonish & narrow.

"Seattle isn't focused on 're-imagining' policing anymore"?

News flash: it's b/c folks like you have abandoned journalism & failed to report on police accountability, so that instead of folks feeling they are forced to choose lots of crime vs. lots of cops we might actually start the discussion of community control of policing so that we could have less crime, less cops, & less cops beating & killing folks.

There are thoughtful alternatives.

So domestic terrorism is now the official platform of the Republican party. ARAB.

7

"Congratulations, Seattle Dems who voted for City Attorney Ann Davison"

The Stranger has become the dad in the classic 90s "you alright! I learned it by watching you!" anti-drug commercial. If you're mad that a Republican was elected in Seattle, The Stranger should take a look in the mirror to see who to blame. Your idiotic refusal to support Pete Holmes -- because you had to try to be edgy and cool rather than reading the political climate -- is why there's a GOP city attorney in Seattle. And writing stuff like this makes it clear that you haven't learned anything from that mistake.

8

Beating the shit out of cops is now “legitimate political discourse.” Rad.

9

Surely if we just get ENOUGH cops out there, there will eventually always be one there to shoot somebody in that brief moment between showing intent to commit crime and commuting the crime. Then, at last, cops will prevent crime.

10

It most certainly is time for the GOP to go fully extinct, hopefully before 2024.

12

The GOP went extinct in Seattle 30 years ago. Now Seattle is safe for shitting, pissing, shooting meth, punching, kicking, stabbing, shooting and various other forms of liberal expression.

These screeds from Rich and TS are so disenginuos. Oh no we are going to look at actually prosecuting criminal behavior instead of enforcing some standards of decency. What Rich never mentions is the alternative where people roll out of Target with 70” TVs and we say its a crime of poverty or random women get hit in the head by a baseball bat for no reason in Belltown and the solution is to do nothing.

Ex-St Louisian here.

What a splendid video to illustrate the perspective of a city of westward expansion descendants who gave up on heading west, saying "fuck it, let's get rich selling wagon wheels and shit."

Besides, didn't Ask Wednesday come first? God made February dreary as fuck, and the church said "let's punctuate that by kicking off a month of self-induced suffering." It was regular human beings, suffering through late winter, forced to endure the Catholic version of no-nut-November, that had themselves a big-brain moment and invented Mardi Gras to get their top tier sinning in before the deadline.

It's a story about human ingenuity, reliance and holding somebody's costume together while they yawn in technicolor behind a dumpster.

It's all about perspective.

Gaslighting again, Rebublicans? What does trump have on these people. He goes down, they all go down?

Oh, that stuffed animal thing.

The decisive losses of all the prison abolitionist candidates should be a lesson to Seattle's hard Left. Not that it will be.

26

DOL still owes me a Driver's License since November. Maybe this is some of the reason.

after the second attempt of someone stealing my vehicle (they failed), I've decided to start my own business making and selling gps trackers and hopefully catalytic converter alarms.
thousands of vehicles are stolen in kc every year and only like 3% are ever recovered... chopped-up and sold for meth. rip.
on that note, I hope the stranger's guy wins for Kc Prosecutor as I look forward to the inevitable rise in vehicle theft, carjacking, and the like so I can make monies.

30

@29: I'll take a catalytic converter alarm. Those thieves should get the death penalty.

@6 jackoff: I'd say it has a lot more to do with corrupt RepubliKKKans around here and nationwide, particularly anyone employed by the SPD who thinks the insurrection and Trump's coup attempt of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 was "justified" and who also participated; MAGA tools insisting the 2020 election was "stolen", therefore insisting on multiple tax dollar wasting recall elections and recounts, gerrymandering, and redistricting; anyone hellbent on destroying our entire planet, economy and environment just so that so few can own everyone and everything all for wont of the last U.S. dollar; anyone who STILL, against overwhelming evidence stupidly believes COVID, a highly infectious globally threatening disease, is a "hoax" and remaining unvaccinated and unmasked is the "raht to feht fer yer Free Dumbs!", and anyone who has more stock invested in the 2nd Amendment than the 1st Amendment restricting citizens the right to vote, arguing for the overturning of Roe and that women should have no say in their reproductive health but unborn fetuses--that have no ability to cast a vote SHOULD, and junior has the perfect "right" to fatally shoot his mommy at a Wal*Mart because a clueless white man wearing an insanely ugly orange rug and an expensive suit said so. Blame the GOP. They're responsible to flushing our U.S. democracy down the toilet, and exacerbating their punitive damages for the last four decades. If you agree with that out-of-control criminal insanity, you're equally to blame.

No garbanzo, we're not going to have capitol punishment for theft. But you have to admit that stealing catalytic converters is a particular egregious and nasty experience for the owners, or society, and our efforts to combat climate change.

Good lord man, think of it. Here we have a device to curtail pollutants and when they're stolen they take literally thousands to replace. Driving up costs even more. They can be sawed off in less than thirty seconds. Even occurring in parking lots while people are shopping.

But of course you only care about the criminals and never the victims, to do so would be 'reactionary'.

@7: Yes, while usually supporting the status quo, the Stranger does have a burning neeeeeeeed to be seen as hip, edgy, and radical -- it constantly gushes from the pores here like material from a busted sewer main, albeit not as pleasantly scented -- but it was the Stranger's straight-up political miscalculation which got Seattle a REPUBLICAN City Attorney.

By snubbing Holmes and endorsing NTK, the Stranger was explicitly trying to eliminate Davison during the primary election. From their non-endorsement of Holmes:

"That said, her [Davison's] mildly respectable showings in the 2020 Washington lieutenant gubernatorial election (she got 285,597 votes!) and in the 2019 Seattle City Council election make us think she could take second in this race if she got a last-minute injection of cash or a Seattle Times endorsement. Davison’s current fundraising numbers don’t support this fear, but we’re not taking any chances." (https://www.thestranger.com/news/2021/07/14/59065522/the-strangers-endorsements-for-the-august-3-2021-primary-election)

Davison then did exactly what the Stranger's resident political geniuses said she would not, and went on to prevail in the general election, which the headline post here denigrates as voters' "ignorance / fear" instead of another yet another example of those same voters' complete dissatisfaction with the status quo, e.g. decisively terminating the political career of the City Council President, and electing a small-business owner to the Council, by (yet again!) rejecting the Stranger's object of slobbering adoration.

While being proven utterly and humiliatingly wrong might eventually become a problem for, say, an elected official, the Stranger's writers are proudly not responsible to Seattle's citizens, and therefore have no need to bother with why Seattle's voters hate the Stranger's beloved status quo so very very much, they elected a REPUBLICAN to city-wide office for the first time in decades.

Looking forward to more history repeating...

How did we get from catalytic converter thefts to "trillionaires" and health care?

I honesty can't say. But I feel that I just got off the roller coaster after traversing kristo's heavily angled lines of text.

I'm sure the next one will be just as breathtaking.

56

@53: Coupled with NTK's appalling messaging. I actually think Nichole has good ideas, passion, and experience that would benefit the system - but it has to be all or nothing with her base's and the TS mindset.

It's really quite tragic.

58

Catalytic converter theft will stop when anyone who buys one from anyone except a licensed repair shop does a quick 5 years.

59

For that matter, no one should be buying anything from tweakers. It would help with bike theft etc.
