The Beijing Olympics are a wonderful opportunity for diverse nations across the globe to come together and celebrate their indifference to the rape and murder of the Uyghurs.

2

Protesting for a 40% wage increase! I hope they're prepared the teachable moment that awaits them.

"Spotify spent this weekend frantically deleting episodes of Joe Rogan’s podcast."

What's the basis for the "frantically" characterization? It reads like a Gateway Pundit or Breitbart story, so I assume it's just something Matt made up on his own in order to make that piece seem more interesting.

@3: What about the sex workers on 99 who need warm and cozy Buicks or Dodge Rams to welcome them into?

7

Sex workers = free enterprise
Joe Rogan = free speech
Where's that libertarian streak that everyone claims they want?

I love that comment Yeshua!

I like the Winter Olympics, but what ugly fucking venues. No snow and nuclear cooling towers. Dystopian shit.

13

Keens, yes. Of late, disappointing; still, none better. Altra's nice--not so durable, but comfy!

14

@12 - No good answers can ever come from excessive and intrusive government.

15

It was Rogan's request to delete the episodes.
but hey, getting things correct has is not something SLOG does too well.
BTW: One of the deleted episodes, was Dan Savage.

@12 After a certain number of screwups, everyone, especially cops, should expect leadership to tell them that they don't get to have nice things. If cops need NKWs for a small number of cases (really, how often are they raiding the drug kingpin's arsenal?), then they should only use them for those cases.

@10,

I actually think that's kinda cool. Yeah, dystopian and even bleak as you mention, but that also serves to lend it a surreal nature that makes for compelling watching (IMHO.) And the lack of snow at least isn't due to global warming, but just the unique geographical climate of the region. I think part of the justification for moving the games around (in addition to the zillions of dollars funneling into the pockets of corrupt organizers, of course) is exposing people to unfamiliar and unique cultural landscapes, and this certainly accomplishes that, if nothing else.

It's not "route 99"; it's HIGHWAY 99.

Local nomenclature can be confusing, I know. It's "Route 66", but the near rhyming of "highway" and "ninety-nine" has been so in the Northwest for generations. They may call it something else in L.A. where they call I-5 "the 5", like we say "the 405", but this because they have too many soul-destroying highways to navigate. But from Oregon to British Columbia it's Highway Ninety-nine.

mil bases are notorious for soil and water contamination. you would think that, with veterans getting free albeit terrible Healthcare, it would be in the government's best interests monetarily to avoid causing long-term health effects and death to troops and their families...but, nah.
this is also why it can be hard to unload old mil bases, land sitting seemingly unused. someone has to pay for the clean-up, or the cover-up. as was the case a few years ago in the bay area wherein the developer knew about contamination and hid it while building low-income housing on old mil land. nothing like looking good by building cheap housing, only to saddle all the tenants with long-term health bills.

What happened in MN is terrible but why does Matt even feel the need to cover it? It's half a country away but I guess publishing examples of police violence from other jurisdictions makes it easier to continue to demonize Seattle police as well especially when he uses labels like "killer cops" to refer to all police.

I guess Matt was so busy scouring the news to continue his opus he missed the latest shootout at the OK Corral that has been going on lately

https://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2022/02/no-injuries-as-capitol-hill-shootout-leaves-shattered-glass-and-bullet-holes-around-pine-and-melrose/

Nothing to worry about there I guess. Who is it around here that loves to tell us the number of violent incidents is actually down compared to the 80s? Feel free to remind us yet again.

Seattle Times today had an article saying how difficult it is to keep the freedom to kill innocent bystanders when they barge into the wrong address with a no-knock warrent while trying to reduce the rate at which they shoot off-duty or plain clothes cops

22

@15 Is he giving some of the $100 million back for the episodes he chose to remove? My guess is Rogan fans really love "edgy" content like when a white dude drops n-bombs, because nothing says white supremacy like appropriating someone else's language. Speaking of white supremacy, how long until the MAGA creeps start attacking Rogan for apologizing?

NFT profiteering must come to an end!

Here Come the Brides---holy SHIT! I was just a young un but still remember that late 60's TV show.
Fun facts: Hugo Montenegro, who scored the TV theme for Here Come the Brides also scored I Dream of Jeannie, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, including The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Among the show's cast members were Robert Brown, Bridget Hanley, Joan Blondell, Susan Tolsky, Henry Beckman, Bobby Sherman, and David Soul who went on to partner with Paul Michael Glaser as the title detectives on Starsky & Hutch.
