Hannah, it's perfectly politically correct for the resents of West Seattle to be ultra-frustrated and be pro-labor at the same time. They're not "NIMBY Trump MAGA" but mostly woke progressives like yourself.

But we can't get mad at you as readers need to know that your "Screw the West Seattle Bridge" snark is in keeping with the your job description:

"Want to write brash, reported opinion pieces about the injustices of the justice system? Then please apply! Want to skip the takes and just report it straight with maybe a little snark here and there? Fine by us! Interested in specializing in cops, courts, jails, youth jails, restorative justice, alternatives to policing, low-level crimes, violent crimes, protests, counter-protests, or white-collar crime? So are we!"

So, let me take this opportunity to promote this job hunt! Want to join these kids? Apply to editorialjob@thestranger.com with the subject line “Staff Writer Application.”

What does "high transmission level" mean in the face of low cases, hospitalizations, and deaths? Is the implication that although cases are low there are still a high number of people being infected? Also, what does loosening COVID measures preempt (i.e. prevent from happening)?

7

The only good thing Putin has done is end the COVID pandemic .... All but the most liberal news and opinion sources now have something else to focus on!

9

@6 -- The point is that the numbers aren't low. They are just lower than they were, when they were extremely high. They aren't even low compared to previous COVID numbers, let alone compared to other transmissible diseases (like the flu). If we loosen restrictions prematurely, the numbers will spike up, and be a big problem again. If we wait a while, it is likely that any spike will involve a lot fewer people.

10

@7: Plus a whole new dazzling gallery of maps and graphics as backdrops for MSNBC hosts.

11

@7. 10: too soon. ukrainians are dying today.

fuck putin. fuck authoritarian paranoia.

12

@8: Index case = a single source?

14

@8 Thanks, I forgot about those arbitrary thresholds. King County is currently at 126.2 cases per 100K, down from the peak of 2024 cases per 100K in January. It looks like our transmission rate is more or less back to average if you base it on the historical data.

@11: Meant no disrespect. Just going from plague coverage to war coverage is at least a dark humor change of pace.

"When two powers fight, the working class loses." TWO powers?? The power, and the bullying, is all on the Russian side. Hannah, I know it taxes the brain, but you might...educate yourself once in a while? Read about history or international affairs? Talk to some Ukranians? There is evil in the world that can't be boiled down to "the Man" vs. the working (or non-working) class. But I suppose when your only tool is a hammer, every subject looks like a nail.

18

Nice Friday Slog AM, Hannah. Thank you.

Seconding what @17 says. "When two powers fight, the working class loses" is a deeply distasteful comment and as profoundly ignorant and historically inaccurate as Vladimir Putin's revisionist history. The reason NATO exists is so that smaller, weaker sovereign states with democratically elected leaders don't get swallowed up by expansionist empires. NATO is strong so that it protects the weak and so that Europe doesn't return to the law of the jungle.

Also, it's worth keeping in mind that much of the history of what is now Ukraine involves a large portion of its population being serfs in the Russian or Polish empires. For those who don't know, a serf is effectively a slave. In history the rebellions of Ukraine against the Russian empire and the Soviet empire have been as much class conflicts as nationalist conflicts.

@23, please stop gaslighting. It's comments like this that should get the users removed.

PrincessAngeline#2 @29, here's a little constructive advice. When you're wrong, just admit it, apologize, and move on. There's no need to lash out at the people who called you out on it or project crazy motives onto them when, God forbid, maybe they just feel compelled to stand up for the truth.

There was only one place in the post where this phrase was used: "When two powers fight, the working class loses:" That's what Suggs quoted @17. That's what you defended. As this commenter @27 wrote: "It will become much easier to tell who has reading comprehension skills and any civic care:"

31

@28 I hate to break it to you, Sir Toby, but if you bother to read the job description posted by The Stranger, it doesn’t include words like “investigative,” “enterprising,” “balanced,” etc. They’re looking for “reporters” who can get up early (i.e., ~ 8:00 a.m.), peruse the Seattle Times website, check out the latest missives from Kshama Sawant and the Seatte Transit Rider’s Union, toss in some snark … and then review amateur porn for “Hump” for the rest of the day.

Oh, I almost forgot — the successful candidate must be able to complain about how they make less than a concrete-truck driver and how they can’t afford a house within walking distance of Cal Anderson Park.

32

"They [tS]’re looking for 'reporters' who can get up early (i.e., ~ 8:00 a.m.), peruse the Seattle Times website, check out the latest missives from Kshama Sawant and the Seatte Transit Rider’s Union, toss in some snark … and then review amateur porn for 'Hump' for the rest of the day."

and they PAY
people to do THIS?

no shit!?

33

He should try Lost Ark.

34

@32 You’re damn right they do! And there is no requirement to have lived here long enough to have driven over the West Seattle Bridge!!

A creative writer like you should apply now: https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2022/02/23/67125932/join-our-team-the-stranger-is-hiring-a-staff-writer

@17 - the Stranger clearly has not only a hammer, but a sickle.

@34 -- well that was
most Flattering M-i-t-S

my reviews of late
have been somewhat
‘mixed’ with this being
one of the Better ones:

my comment was “ … so sickening and so evil, I feel dirty giving it any more attention” seemingly emanating from a “ …depraved, delusional, hateful mind… “

there was some great
Life cum Career
advice given
as well:

“Seek help, friend. Or maybe
just find some other inter-

so another perspective

@28 Tracy Record at The West Seattle Blog is on it. Check out the latest, complete with a link to the union's latest press release on the status of negotiations:

https://westseattleblog.com/2022/02/were-still-hoping-to-open-in-mid-2022-bridge-work-director-tells-west-seattle-transportation-coalition/

I'm sure this goes without saying, but the Stranger is only good for entertainment. If you want news, the local blogs like WSB are head and shoulders above.
