"The prediction is that Biden will control the Senate"

Joe Manchin and Mitch McConnell control the Senate. Two peas in a coal-infested shit pod.

The difference between $3/gallon and $5/gallon means next to nothing for the vast majority of the loudest complainers. If you’re genuinely unable to financially absorb a month or two of $80-$100 of additional cost per month, then fine (although if you’re that close to the edge, expensive gas is just one of the many, many ways you can fall off the cliff, and I don’t know why this particular thing is so uniquely ruinous). But I hear an awful lot of whining from people who aren’t really that affected by it. They would just rather bitch than suffer the slightest inconvenience, or contribute in the most infinitesimal way to a worldwide push against tyranny and despotism.

It’s getting scary. I heard yesterday that someone in Missouri has introduced legislation allowing people to sue anyone who assists someone obtaining an abortion out-of-state. See? That’s not about being pro-life. That’s about punishing that bitch who got knocked up. More states are moving to ban the morning-after and the abortion pill from being delivered by mail. Nice. Just fucking scary. Jesus from the Dollar Store indeed.

There’s just too many people in this country who are against anything that approaches a generous, or even adequate, social assistance program. They believe that yeah, we’ll help you a little - enough to get yourself together and to start making better choices and decisions, but that’s it. After that, you’re on your own.

You have to be so poor now to get SNAP. They make you jump over all kinds of hurdles, and god forbid you get a refund check or a small class action settlement. The amount gets deducted from whatever you receive normally (and the agencies KNOW when you’ve scored a few extra legal dollars). I think a family of four only gets around $300 a month in food assistance which is Top Ramen time three days a week. I don’t like the idea of hungry children, hungry families. I don’t want to dismiss personal responsibility, but this country should be better at helping people in real need. And don’t make them jump through hoops-of-fire to get that assistance.

And yeah, you have to be careful about it. I’m thinking about those assholes who, through fraud, raided California’s Unemployment Pandemic Assistance of $20B. Some homes with Beverly Hills addresses received notices of payment using hundreds of different names at the same address. They recently caught a couple of fraudsters vacationing in France.

I think that a lot of the people who are against adequate assistance are low income themselves, and they think they know what it’s like. They don’t. Not completely. Meanwhile, Congress allots $300 a month which is less than the amount they spend on one dinner out.

I can see where people get their notions. During the pandemic here in LA, daily on TV, the food distribution centers were packed with bright and shiny, late-model SUVs lined up for free food. You didn’t even have to get out of your car. All you had to do was pop the rear door, and your SUV was filled with sustenance and disposable diapers. But still, you can’t judge because you don’t know the whole story, right?

Idaho, Yeah. A friend of mine and I (I'm white; she isn't) used to kid each other that should we ever develop a death wish, we should fly into Coeur D'Alene, rent a big, white Cadillac convertible and drive through the state with a "Just Married" sign on the back.

“The good infinity of government spending.”

Freudian slip, Charles?

11

@8: Polite society requires us to respect what others consider expensive as being true for them.

12

@11, yes, I’m sure the motivations of the complainers is solely about economic justice and a principled stand against inequality.

BINGO. to paraphrase auntie Gee
you schmackyed it outta da Pahk.

14

@3/5:

Yes, it's true: crazy people didn't exist in our reality until just a couple of days ago. Thanks for pointing that out.

15

@14: It should be pointed out to you that obvious facts don't negate the impact of events.

Charles, Social Housing in Merica has always depended on donations, except in infrequent instances.

The reason is simple: Republicans. There hasn't been a new Federal Housing program since Hope VI (Othello, Rainier Vista, High Point, Yesler Terrace) in 1998. 24 years ago. And that program depended on Market-Rate sales to subsidize the Low-Income construction.

Tax Credit financing can only get non-profit providers so far, and it's cutthroat to secure the financing. No wonder State & locals turn to the wealthy to subsidize.

20

@16 these are the same people who, whenever someone loses their life on 3rd, say "oh well that corner has always been bad I I have been here since the 70s, sooo...ya know...just let the murderers be!"

22

RepubliKKKans are shitty excuses for people and deserve to get fired off one-way into outer space and cornholed by Jeff Bezos' grossly overpriced dildo.

23

@19:

Yep, your Sherlockian powers of deduction have totally found us out - SLOG commenters are single-handedly responsible for ALL CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN SEATTLE!

@20:

Well, if murders have been happening there for, oh, roughly a full half-century or more, then clearly it's not some new phenomenon that people should be all that shocked over, should they? Again, you-all act like this shit just started happening, while conveniently disregarding the very obvious fact that violent behavior is pretty much hard-wired into the human animal. I mean, according to mythology, the fourth person to walk the planet murdered the third person, his own brother. Why are we always so shocked that people kill other people? If you want something to REALLY be shocked about, maybe take a look at what's happening in Ukraine right now. Oh, but that's SO FAR AWAY, so it's easy to ignore, amiright?

24

RepubliKKKans, particularly Idaho and Texas lawmen, can all eat my shit, choke violently on it, drop dead, and get cornholed in Hall by Rush Limbaugh and Doug Ericksen.

25

@23 COMTE: What is happening in the Ukraine is indeed, tragically heartbreaking.
Vladimir Putin, like his sock puppet, Orange Turd is a heartless war criminal who should be globally held accountable for his unspeakably cruel acts of tyranny and violence.

26

lol Comte... I can't even.
it's not the murders themselves that are so shocking, just people (like you) who have a shocking indifference to them.
"well Ukraine has a war so are murders on third really all that bad?"
