Wow, I’ve been reading up on this week’s apocalyptic crypto crash. Those “investors” look about as happy as a cop that just got rear-ended.

/seen online/

“Hey remember going to the movies and Matt Damon said if you didn’t buy crypto you were a pussy?”

This is fine.

@1:

Only if the teacher files a grievance with their union for breach of the collective bargaining agreement, but that would require evidence that the district didn't follow the correct disciplinary actions enshrined in the CBA. My guess is this one does, so there wouldn't be any grounds for filing in the first place.

"...even though city studies just straight up could not confirm if new cops will flock to this type of incentive."

It was ONE "study," which had NO salary, retention, or other hard data of ANY kind. It was a two-page survey of the opinions of Department Heads in the City's bureaucracy. Those opinions differed on the efficacy of (among other topics) hiring bonuses. The "study" authors then formed their own opinions from these opinions. That's it.

"Instead of throwing cash at anyone who will apply,"

Which is not what CM Nelson is proposing, but mere months of covering this topic have yet to impart that knowledge to the Stranger.

"Pierce County will give a $10,000 retention bonus to existing officers,"

So, the Stranger is now in favor of spending more money on cops?

Ironically, on this point, the Stranger could make the case that retention bonuses might not work. The Stranger could note the hostile and toxic work environment the City Council needlessly created within the SPD via the Council's "defund" debacle, and conclude that so long as the Council seems anti-cop, money for retention won't help the SPD. Therefore, it's better to spend that money on bonuses for new hires, in the hope fresh blood can help dissipate the hostile and toxic work environment the City Council needlessly created.

"Councilmember Sara Nelson, who shows Sawant-levels of stubbornness on this issue,"

Wow. Did the Stranger just imply that anything about CM Sawant could possibly be considered as less than the absolute glowing perfection of the entire human condition?
Hannah, I hope you haven't 'earned' yourself a trip to Room 101 at City Hall. ;-)

"Ratchet"?

I am obviously not up to speed on contemporary racial slurring.

6

Surely giving the police even more money will stop them from freely murdering and beating the shit out of people.

Best funded street gang in America.

"My brother in Christ" brought me a small joy. ty.

@4/6 the best part about signing bonuses is if no one signs on the money is never paid out. It still requires SPD to go out and recruit and have someone complete the training before a cent is paid out. From that perspective its low risk and high reward which is all the bellyaching about money from Mosqueda is bullshit.

Under Herbold's plan that money is spent on a recruiter who I guess is going to use a Confundus charm on these people so they don't remember how shitty and awful the SCC is? However they do it that money is spend once you do that as the recruiters salary will be paid whether they are successful or not. I really would like to know who this magical person that can someone convince people to sign up and is better than the recruiters we have now.

I had to read up on "ratchet" as well. In addition to blip's research, I found that "ratchet" is a mispronunciation / inner city slang of term, "wretched". So if you are a slob with some street lingo, you are so "ratchet".

I guess I'll have to watch 'Airplane' again, I must have missed that one.

@10: CM Nelson's playing of CMs Herbold and Mosqueda on this is nothing short of amazing. She's already baited them into many months (and counting...) of obstreperously opposing an obviously good idea, an idea which would be completely noncontroversial in any other context. Instead of just authorizing expenditure of this trivial amount of money and seeing if anything comes of it (and if nothing does, no problem, as you noted), they're hell-bent upon turning it into a chronic spectacle of the newbie offering an obviously sensible suggestion, and the absurdly out-of-touch old-timer insiders openly playing every tired and dishonest political trick they have in trying to stifle it. That voters already want more enforcement of laws (ZOMG SEATTLE VOTERS ELECTED A REPUBLICAN MY GOD WTF THEY CAN DO THAT THOSE GODDAMN DISOBEDIENT BASTARDS?!?!) and will tend generally to identify with any new CM, just sails right past the veterans. Having the Stranger persistently egging on these obstructionists, in bitter defiance of last November's clear election results, just adds icing to this delicious cake. (That the Stranger has already paid CM Nelson the absolute highest possible compliment they can bestow -- a direct comparison to their very own Dear Great Maximum One & Only True Leader -- shows just how well Nelson has performed on this issue.)

In CM Herbold's case, she was (barely) re-elected on her promise of assuring a proper amount of funding for SPD. Since that election, she's first joined the Defunderpants Gnomes, and now (as you noted) proposes hiring a consultant to waste money. Her eventual opponent won't even have to hire a screenwriter for the attack ads, as CM Herbold is already doing that work admirably enough on her own.

KIRO didn't take the video, a bus operator did because he has had enough of this shit displayed in the video.
Just waiting for that hot stranger take, "Union Bus Operators Are Karens, Want Bums to Stop Smoking Fenty on Bus and Pissing in Seats"

14

@11 - nothing ratchet about June Cleaver.

And there is a school of thought that says the decline in crime rates in the 90s and 2000s was due to Roe.

15

@12 eyeroll

9 dimensional chess, maaaaaan.

16

@12 yeah its been fun to watch the council actually having to debate things again instead of rubber stamping crappy policies and patting themselves on the back. It's telling the anointed one is not making a bigger fuss of things. Not being able to "pack the chamber" has really put a damper on her playbook. Outside of virtue signaling resolutions she's pretty much MIA. Still waiting on her perfect rent control plan. I'd be surprised if Herbold even runs again. Between the defund nonsense and the shit show that is the West Seattle Bridge she is not very well liked. A half decent candidate can take her on and win pretty easily.

@14 I had to look up that school of thought and it sounds kind of racist to me to be honest.

17

Mitch McConnell, its RepubliKKKan sock puppet, Joe Manchin, and the rest of the Party of Trump should be roasted on a spit and fed to the sewer rats.
BANS OFF OUR BODIES!!!!!!

18

@15: I shouldn't have left open the implication CM Nelson is intentionally playing or baiting her fellow CMs; the simplest explanation is she's just trying to hire more cops. Their bitterly obstinate opposition to her simple, low-risk, and good idea makes for an amazing show, though, and not one which has them looking good. They're neither thinking through the details of her proposed policy, nor how they look in opposing it.

20

@16 - it's related to a reduction in the number of young men who are not born to mothers who want to take care of them. The theory is based on data and correlations in abortion rate, birth rates, crime rates. It may demonstrate that society doesn't treat racial groups equally, but it is not a racist theory.

21

I don't think what that teacher said is racist. Although I know to people like Hanna and others at the Stranger, everything is racist. I would call the comments classist at the most, inappropriate for a teacher to call a student at the least.

22

@14, @16, @20... it was postulated in the book 'Freakonomics'
