We just need to be more civil to the right wing and then they'll stop killing people

2

@1 yeah. If only they had more ā€œfree speechā€ and the mean ol woke social justice warriors didnā€™t make them feel so racist for being racist they would not have to go around murdering people for Tucker Carlson.

I actually walk along Florentia street when I'm walking to Lower Queen Anne from Fremont, so it's fine by me if it stays as an arterial, so long as it's restored to it's pre-1935 65 foot zoning, before we did Redlining.

ā€œThe Israeli Execution of Al Jazeera
reporter Shireen Abu Akleh

Israel, which shoots hundreds of Palestinians a year, routinely includes reporters and photographers on its target lists.

I have been in combat, including in clashes between Israeli and Palestinian forces. Snipers are dreaded on a battlefield because each kill is calculated.

The execution of Abu Akleh was not an accident. She was singled out for elimination.

Whether this killing was ordered by commanding officers, or whether it was the whim of an Israeli sniper, I cannot answer.

Israelis shoot so many Palestinians with impunity my guess is the sniper knew he or she could kill Abu Akleh and never face any consequences.

The shooting, Al Jazeera said in a statement, was ā€˜a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms.ā€™ Abu Akleh, the network added, was ā€˜assassinated in cold blood.ā€™ā€

13

@11 Yeah shoe horning opposition to rightwing racist ideology into a news story about a rightwing racist murderer is such a stretch. I'm sorry it hurt your feelings.

14

@12 he's composing his own manifesto as we speak.

15

we can TOTALLY bring down the number of mass shootings! We just need to up the number of people shot that qualifies. How ā€˜bout 100?

24

Wait, there's a paper version of this, @20?

What is it called, "The Stranger in Paper"?

25

Why use rightwing when "idiot" will suffice?

26

Man, I'm really worried about "otheriz-ing"racist psychopaths that believe in replacement theory. Boy. I'd really hate if if those guys would otherwise be on my team!

Biden should really stretch himself to extend the big tent over the Racist Conspiracy Theory crowd. I guess maybe wear Q baseball hat or white hood? Brandish an AK? Talk about sending black and brown people "back" to where they came from like good 'ol Tucker Carlson.

Yeah. I'm really broken up about alienating the shit bags on the rightwing who follow the whims of racist garbage like Tucker Carlson.

A group for which apparently you have very deep sympathies.

"Congratulations to the National Rifle Association on numerous mass shootings....."
I don't care a rolling donut about the NRA. But the solution to this problem has nothing to do with guns. It has to do with education, family up bringing, & if teens are not being taught right, they will gravitate to what's wrong.
Supremacy of ANY race is an idea so stupid & objectionable that only a blank mind in the formative stages, which is impressionable by ANY seemingly coherent belief system is liable to accept it. That's why there's so many shootings by younger people.
This is the clear evidence of the rot in America. It's not the political system. The stage for Trump & The Tea Party was set long ago by our underfunded education system which thinks children & young adults are full adults capable of adequately evaluating their own beliefs, clothing, hair styles & behavior.....and even worse, parents who take no responsibility for the moral direction of their children. Or do you really think children are capable of choosing correctly between a grocery store and a candy store? Or even in a grocery store between vegetables & Doritos?

".....he also appears to have experienced an exceedingly gentle arrest."
Speaking of echoing Tucker Carlson's talking points.....Now SLOG is following in the steps of Fox & Friends???? Or are you saying that Trump was right when he advocated the police were too gentle when they put their hand on the head of protesters as they were put in the back of squad cars.......that they should have been busting heads rather than protecting them. Tell us your wisdom, Matt......should the police have just done him there & then to save us the cost of a trial? Tell us, Matt.

"The 8-year-old reported missing near Bitter Lake has been found."
More GREAT (read SHITTY) reporting by SLOG: Found alive?...safe?...well?...abused?...clothed?...???

"Here come more scooters."
Just got back yesterday from a month in Bordeaux France. Bordeaux' transit system includes EVERYTHING. Trams, Buses, river ferries, cycles & scooters both gas & electric. Electric bicycles are part of the public transit system. And it works wonderfully there. For example, the day I arrived I was able to get an unlimited pass.....a photo ID actually.....that covers tram, bus, river ferry, & electric bikes. $40 for 4 weeks. (The monthly pass is even cheaper but it runs from the 1st to the 30th. I arrived on the 15th.)
Just a few catches: The highest speed possible (due simply to the amount of traffic & narrow streets) in the inner city where all these vehicles co exist is about 20MPH.....that's highest. average is probably 10-15MPH. That means the scooters & bikes are able to go faster than the cars or even motor cycles. (UBER took me down one particular one way street where at one point the clearance was about 6 inches beyond the mirrors on both sides of the car. I took a 90min city tour that was over in about 15min because a city bus took the left mirror off our tour bus.)
The other thing is that scooters, bicycles, and even motor cycles ride ANYWHERE in Bordeaux.....on the sidewalk, through the public squares.....ANYWHERE. It all works there because it's so slow.....uh, if you don't mind the occasional whiff of exhaust at your cafe table.
Now imagine multiple people riding electric scooters, electric bikes, mopeds, Vespas, & Harley's down the sidewalk in Seattle. That's why the people designing mixed vehicle transit here, who have no idea of how it really works, or how narrow the streets need to be, or how slow the traffic needs to be.....why those people will probably not pull it off for decades yet. (The week before I left the US, I was caught between fear & delight when, as I was making a left turn in Seattle, some dummy on an electric scooter driving at high speed on the sidewalk came shooting across the street directly in front of me. My delight would have been to have run him over. Whatever you think of yielding to pedestrians in a crosswalk, with which I agree, he was clearly driving the wrong way down the wrong side of the street. Just because it ain't against the law doesn't mean it's a good thing.)

"Iā€™ll be digging into this situation in more detail this week, but it looks like SDOT...."
This is clearly more shitty reporting: What is SLOG here?......Trump's gosip reporter? "It looks like...." "I've heard....." "People are saying....." "Tucker Carlson reported that....." Stick that where the sun don't shine.

29

@28 Too much time on your hands?

30

".....he also appears to have experienced an exceedingly gentle arrest."
What that's about is the kid didn't resist in any way.
Unlike those who get their heads busted or get shot, he didn't resist, or question the police, or jump up and down shouting about being a man, or have a cell phone in his hand that he waved at police, or dare the cops to shoot him, or fight with the cops or try to grab a cop's gun.
Apparently his father really DID have that often ficticious conversation about being careful when confronted by law enforcement......and THIS kid really DID listen to his father. (Possibly unfortunate what other stuff the father had to say.)
The police really, really, really don't abuse people needlessly because they're acutely aware that if they do, it will be used as a mitigating factor in rendering a verdict or at sentencing.

31

@28, Nope. They say that writing is good catharsis for recovering alcoholics. I thought it might also be good for recovering assholes.
Already answered that question multiple times.

32

@31 s/b @29

33

@18, and that's EXACTLY the NRA's position on how the existing laws need to be enforced rather than enacting new gun laws.
How's that working out for either side?

@21, fortunately or unfortunately there's a lot of truth in that.

@23, "...who think there is room for common ground with raging bigots."
It's not a matter of sharing common ground. It's a matter of understanding that black people, the poor, the homeless, and any other unfortunates are still ordinary people and not gods to be worshiped. And that their problems are not subject to glib, simplistic solutions. Intelligent, reasonable people can understand crazies even as they reject and condemn them.

@25, because it's polite & more likely to get people to actually finish reading what you had to say. (Yeah, yeah, I know I don't always practice what I preach.)

34

Speaking of high-rises and people descending them from the outside: About twenty years ago - l want to say it was right after 911? - someone parachuted off the top of the Columbia Tower. It did not end well for the parachuter. He didn't die or anything, but he got pretty banged up, and then charged for a bunch of stuff.

Several years earlier, a homeless guy somehow found his way to one of the top floors of what is now the Safeco building (aka the box the Space Needle came in). When he was confronted by security, he said something very much to the effect of "Opps, Gotta go!", threw a fire extinguisher out a window, and went out after it.

There was also a whole series of defenestrations at the old Frye Hotel in the 90's, but that's a different story.

37

@34, That all just shows how little you know about police. If they're good at anything in terms of venting their frustration, it's getting even rather than getting mad. Police officers are expert at giving breaks to people they like, and setting in motion Rube Goldberg legal machines which drop a thousand tons of bricks on people they don't like......but the bricks fall so far down the road, the sap never realizes where they came from.
Again I often offer the phrase "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" If you're not familiar with it, look it up. You'll see that long before the Romans made it big, the world knew that policing humanity would be a balancing act.

@35, Yessssss, it's your calm & serene manner & disposition which assure me that you are the perfect person to dispense justice in our land.

"An exceedingly gentle arrest"

So what to you suggest? A Derek Chauvin style knee on the neck? Would that redeem the police in the minds of you cop haters? Tucker Carlson would have fun with that, blaming the left with some contorted point and it would fertilize the cult mentality around this killer even more.

41

@39: Calm in the face of danger is what soldiers and police are trained to do, like at beach at Normandy or in the streets of our crime infested cities.

44

@43: What do you want Garb? Cops enforce laws, courts enforce punishment. Are you actually wanting cops to exceed their boundaries here?

46

@39, Yes, yes.....jumping up and down, hollering & screaming, running around like a chicken with it's head cut off definitely makes people work harder & faster & makes things go better.
You'd make a great boss.
@41, Amen.
@42, See, again you misunderstand: You don't have to be jumping up and down and screaming in panic to realize that, when some idiot has a gun pointed at you that your life is in danger and the proper response is to shoot them.
@43, again, you're asking the police to gift wrap sympathy & mitigation to the shooter. If I was family, I'd be in a rage, but in the end I'd thank the cops for doing the right thing to get the harshest sentence for the shooter.
@44, and what's your point. The woodcarver didn't obey the command to drop the knife & he died. The officer shooting was ruled excessive and he's off the force. My point has always been, the system takes care of bad police and people who can't obey a police order wind up dead. My further point has always been, if you're going to carry a gun & use lethal force, you damn well better know what you're doing, and if you're going to disobey & argue with police, you damn well better be ready to die.

48

@47, "....along with all the dinosaurs...."
Sorry, my dick's waaaaayyyyy too short for that.
The YouTube vid YOU referenced (or the Wiki about it) says the woodcarver was armed.
You write like all authority is murderous self centered Trumps. Authority is a pain in the ass but, again, please, tell me how civilization exists without it. Life is pain & suffering. If you can change that, you've got my vote.
