...for "Citizen’s Tip Breaks Up The Party, Five Arrested."

Another tip from a watchful citizen early Tuesday morning brought the Greensburg Police Department closer to exterminating the drug problem in the city.

My goodness—a bust that very nearly exterminated the drug problem in Greensburg? Man, the Greensburg Police Department must have broken up a major drug distribution operation, huh? With a lead like that I'm guessing that "watchful citizen" helped the GPD round up Greenburg's most notorious drug kingpins. We're on the edges of our seat, Joe Hornaday!

According to Greensburg Police Chief Brian Heaton, a tip about possible drug use at 936 E. Colonial Manor Drive, specifically the apartment of Adam Blair, was received by dispatch at 11:44 p.m. Monday night. The caller advised that there was suspicious activity, strange noises and unusual odors coming from the apartment. When GPD officers arrived, the strange smell was identified as “burnt marijuana,” Chief Heaton reported.

After identifying the apartment that was emitting the odors, the GPD attempted to make contact. But inside the apartment, no one answered. Working quickly to establish probable cause, the officers sought to obtain a search warrant from the office of the Decatur County Prosecutor. In the interim period before the warrant was granted, the GPD kept a secure perimeter around the residence, making sure that no one went in or out of the apartment, Chief Heaton explained. “It definitely tied up our units (for about two hours),” Heaton said.

The search warrant was secured and served at 1:23 a.m. Tuesday. Upon gaining entry to the apartment, the police found marijuana and proof of marijuana consumption and the five suspects were arrested. The Police Chief stressed again the importance of community involvement in a case such as this. Without the tip from the public, the alleged marijuana den might not have been uncovered and busted.

Um... five people were arrested for smoking pot? Not growing pot, not selling pot. Smoking pot. In private. In Indiana. In an an apartment—excuse me, in a "marijuana den." Or, as we like to call them here in Seattle, "an apartment." If that kind of bust nearly exterminated the drug problem in Greensburg, Hornaday, then it's safe to say that Greensburg doesn't have a drug problem. It does, however, have a police department with way too much time on its hands—late-night search warrants and police barricades to bust five people smoking pot in their own apartment—and, of course, a stupid fucking credulous hack in Joe Hornaday.

Hornaday wraps up his SFCHery with a call for other "watchful citizens" to report all suspected drug activity to the authorities:

The Greensburg Police Department always accepts tips from the community. The main phone number for the GPD is 812-663-3131. The GPD tip line to report crimes is 66-CRIME, or 662-7463. Callers to the tip line may remain anonymous.
