"The men were wearing their Sounders scarves over their faces as they approached him."

A Portland Timbers fan who thought he got into "friendly rivalry banter with several Sounders fans" after a preseason game last week was beaten by those fans and dragged around the sidewalk, according to police.

The incident happened Thursday about 10:30 p.m., shortly after Portland beat Seattle 1-0. The victim, a 27-year-old man, was bantering with the three Sounders fans near the intersection of Second Avenue South and South Main Street — about two blocks from Qwest Field.

"According to (the victim), the men were wearing their Sounders scarves over their faces as they approached him," Officer Aaron Parker wrote in an incident report, released Wednesday. "He felt one of the men grab onto his scarf and pull it backwards."

The victim grabbed the scarf so it wouldn't be stolen, fell to the ground, "and was punched in the head several times by all three men," according to the report.
