John Grades The Elephant Bed, 2009

That would be John Grade. This is a big deal—and Grade deserves it.

Yesterday the American Academy of Arts & Letters announced Grade is winner of the $10,000 Willard L. Metcalf Award for "a young artist of great promise." (PDF.) Grade must have been beside himself: The panel of judges was chaired by Martin Puryear, one of the leading sculptors of our time and an inspiration for Grade's work, and the rest of the panel is an all-star lineup, too: Chuck Close, Robert Ryman, Eric Fischl, Judy Pfaff, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Jane Freilicher, and William Bailey.

Then, Grade got word he's received a $25,000 Pollock-Krasner Award.
