Asshole:

[Huckabee] also affirmed support for a law in Arkansas that prohibits same-sex couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents. "I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family," Huckabee said. "And always we should act in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interest of the adults."

"Children are not puppies," he continued.

Where do children who need to be adopted come from? Where do the hundreds of thousands of children currently languishing in foster care come from? These children are not waiting for homes because gays and lesbians failed to use birth control or neglected and abused their children so badly that the state had to step in. "Puppies" who need homes—children who need to be adopted or are waiting for foster care placements—are not being created or abused, neglected, and abandoned by irresponsible out gays and lesbians. Lots of "puppies"—including hard-to-place "puppies" like these boys—are adopted by responsible gay and lesbian couples only after they've been failed pretty spectacularly by irresponsible heterosexual parents.

There are more children waiting for homes—foster homes and permanent homes—than there are couples ready and able to adopt them. The "best interest of the children" is not protected by denying children the safety and security of a permanent home and loving parents.

If Huckabee seriously wants to prevent gays and lesbians from adopting then he needs to prevent straight people from having children they can't take care of. That means backing comprehensive sex education, supporting access to cheap and effective birth control options (including abortion services), and support for social programs that make it easier for low-income folks to keep and raise their own children if they do get pregnant (health care for all, federally-subsidized daycare, more aide for families with small children). This won't stop gays and lesbians from becoming parents: even if there were no American children in need of homes, there's still surrogacy and co-parenting and foreign adoptions.

As for Arkansas's ban on same-sex couples serving as adoptive or foster parents: Mike Huckabee is a rich man. He lives in Arkansas. So how many children has he adopted out of foster care?
