John Diaz was confirmed to become Seattle's next (permanent) police chief by the Seattle City Council's public safety committee.

Via the Seattle TImes:

The vote virtually assures that the full nine-member council will approve his confirmation next week. The committee's three regular members — Chair Tim Burgess, Sally Bagshaw and Sally Clark — and alternate member Bruce Harrell voted in favor of confirmation, along with Councilmember Nick Licata, who attended the meeting and cast a vote.

If confirmed by the full council next Monday, Diaz will be the first permanent chief to ascend from the department's ranks in over 30 years. Somebody buy the man a lap dance! (That's legal, right?)
