It's only a few times every year that a release date for a book becomes an event, and tomorrow is one of those events: Mockingjay, the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy for young adults, comes out on Tuesday, August 24th.

I didn't know much about this series before I started seeing listings for the Mockingjay release parties in our inbox, so I asked a few local booksellers, and here's what I gather: It's set in a dystopian North America, it's got some political intrigue, and there are no goddamned elves or vampires. According to all my bookseller sources, it's much better written than Twilight (but not as good as Harry Potter), and it has a strong, smart female protagonist. (If you need more information than that, there's always Wikipedia.)

The author of the Hunger Games series will be coming to Seattle for events at Elliott Bay Book Company and Third Place Books on November 6th, but in case that's too long for you to wait, you might want to go to University Book Store, which is having a midnight release party with costumes and trivia (doors open at 11 pm for that one). Secret Garden up in Ballard will be having an all-day release party tomorrow from 10 am to 8 pm, with prizes, raffles, and "goodies." I have purchased the first book in the series and will let you know what I think a little closer to the author appearance.
