This video from IDEO (via Gizmodo) highlights three different ways e-books could change in the near future. The first concept, Nelson, appears to work mainly for non-fiction titles: It provides secondary sources, alternate viewpoints, and ongoing debate relating to the book. The second, Coupland, has to do with social reading. And the third, Alice, provides a method for novels to become more immersive. I think all three of these look exciting, and I like how they don't work for every single kind of book—a political thriller is not a political manifesto, and their e-book versions should not act the same.
