There's a whole lot going on today, including a cookbook, a collection of nonsense verse for children, a book about Jimi Hendrix, and a Buddhist self-help book.

There are two book events you should know about. One is the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale at Magnuson Park. If you've never gone to this, you really should give it a try: You could come away with a shelf full of books that will keep you busy for months, and it'll just cost you $12 .

The other event is a single-day comic book convention called the Jet City Comics Show at Seattle Center. Featured comics talent includes: Peter Bagge, Greg Rucka, and Stranger Genius Jim Woodring.

The Central Library gets together this afternoon to celebrate the 50th anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird. Local author Stephanie Kallos will talk about the importance of Harper Lee's only book, with screenings of part of a documentary titled Scout, Atticus and Boo. They'll be showing the film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird starring Gregory Peck in its entirety.

This last event almost escaped our calendar's notice; a participant just e-mailed it to me a day ago. It's a celebration of "The Advent of Fall" at The Chapel at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N). Charles Karasek, Spencer Moody, and Dan Raphael will be doing something that may or may not involve performance. Baby Guns, Krys Mason, and Perpetual Ritual will make music. "Ezra Mark and others" will read. There will be sound and audio collages by Andrew Bleeker and Ryan Rood, and there will be zines for sale, as well as a visual art component, too. It's a suggested donation of $5-$15 at the doors, and the event starts at 8.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
