  • "Hi, I'm an earl. I have this idea. It's called a sandwich."
The sandwich shop Homegrown—locations in Fremont and Capitol Hill and Queen Anne—is throwing a Halloween gag: Dress up like the guy who invented sandwiches back in the 1700s and you get a free one.

"We’re looking for authenticity here. Think coat tails and powdered wigs, not modern interpretations of the Earl," Homegrown says. They will also accept people dressed as the Count of Monte Cristo—either the vengeful Dumas character or the ham, turkey, and swiss sandwich that's dipped in egg batter, deep fried, and served with jam and powdered sugar (sounds uncomfortable).

By the way, for your stomach's consideration: I had a an andouille, chive, and cheddar sandwich for lunch yesterday at Homegrown—sausage from Rain Shadow Meats, raw milk white cheddar from Calf & Kid, red onion, arugula, chive and caramelized onion spread on a toasted brioche roll. Recommended!!
