On Monday, while walking home with some groceries just before snow shut down the city, Joseph M. LaMagno, 58, was killed, police say, by a schizophrenic man he'd never met before. The man delivered "at least ten blows" to LaMagno's head with a hatchet, according to a detective working the case.

On Tuesday evening, friends of LaMagno gathered at the site of the murder, 15th Ave and E Union, to honor his life and add candles and flowers to a memorial that's still being tended today.

Behind the memorial, a rock painted with a message that predates the murder.
