Two Sundays ago, a mom was kicked out of the Hirshhorn Museum in D.C. for nursing her baby on a bench on the lower level (a relatively inconspicuous spot). Given that the Hirshhorn is part of the Smithsonian (meaning it's federal property), breastfeeding is protected in the galleries. The museum had to apologize, and now, on Saturday from 10 am to noon, moms are invited to breastfeed in the galleries in a show of solidarity. I'm all for it. Art (and American life, I'm tempted to say) needs all the anti-preciousness it can get, especially when it comes to a favorite historical subject of male artists.
