The Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society shelter in British Columbia reports having treated about 20 birds this year, which is a record high number. Some of the birds are found on the ground, and are too weak to fly. Others are literally falling out of the sky. One eagle even slid off a roof yesterday.

CBC reports that biologists are concerned as thousands of the bald eagles are resorting to scavenging at landfills, where they can ingest poisons and are often attacked by rats.

During the Cold War, it was the mighty eagle and the mighty bear. In the age after history, the post-neoliberal moment, the moment that finds market ideology continuing without legitimacy, it is the indigent eagle verses the always ignoble rat.
