Presumably, one of the purposes of redrawing WA-09 into a "majority-minority" congressional district was to increase the likelihood of Washington electing a minority to congress. And at the time the majority-minority proposal was first being pitched, one of the names being bandied about as a potential candidate was OneAmerica founder Pramila Jayapal, who had already announced her intention to step down as executive director. Well, apparently not.

"I've decided I really want to take some time to be around a little more for my family and think about what my next journeys might be," Jayapal responded via email. "But you can be sure that OneAmerica will be holding whomever represents that district to high standards in terms of the issues that matter to people of color."

Support The Stranger

Jayapal sees the redrawn maps as "a huge testament to the power of hundreds of ordinary people" who turned out at commission hearings to speak in support of a majority-minority district, and she hopes his new district will push Rep. Adam Smith toward better representing the needs of immigrants and people of color.

No doubt it will. Though at the moment, no Democrat of any color has announced plans to challenge Smith, and I doubt any viable Democrat will.
