This wake up call is a welcome sign. Let's hope it prevails in November.
I'd love to see a prevailing Blue wave go nationwide.
Time to drain the swamp!
Here's hoping all of this sneering triumphalism merely sets up an epic election-night sore-loser rant, like this one the Stranger served up in 2021, by Hannah "Pants On Fire" Kreig and Alexis Mercedes Rinck's Future (?) Boy Toy:
'The person who "effectively elected Republican Ann Davison" was the three-term incumbent who apparently spent more time sipping wine and watching the Olympics than running a meaningful primary campaign. And if backing Nikkita Oliver was a dumb move, then we'll probably make that dumb move again, and again, and again until they win — if they're ever interested in running again.'
This epic exercise in victim-blaming and bitter, fallen-hero worship produced one of the most heavily-censored comment threads in the Stranger's history, but a few items of truth did slip through:
'You are obviously unable to perform any sort of introspective analysis. You only choose the candidates with the "correct" answers. Everyone else is wrong, misguided capitalist pigs who don't care about homelessness or anything else but their selfish interests.
'That's why your horrible candidates lost and why no one really respects the Stranger anymore. No introspection. No respect for alternate and even gasp liberal viewpoints. Your way is. the. only. right. way. Dunno. Sounds kinda autocratic to me.'
'You're both too stuck in ideological totalitarianism to understand, but most people just want to be able to take their dog for a walk without worrying about it getting stomped to death by a meth head.
'So lets run on a leave the junkies in the park alone platform. Derrrrr'
'After an absolutely embarrassing loss, these are the takeaways? I mean, a republican got elected in Seattle over your preferred candidate, how could that not sting? I guess this is how the SECB plans to keep its losing streak going. The only real victory you guys racked up was Teresa Mosqueda, who was able to just eke out a victory over some guy who may or may not really exist.'
(And how did Mosqueda take this news? By executing an escape plan, quitting two years after her lackluster showing. A commenter noted how the election results foreshadowed this:)
'If only a serious candidate had run against Mosqueda.'
'Voters hate The Stranger's vision for Seattle so much, they elected a Republican for the first time in 30 years. Keep telling voters they're stupid and greedy. Keep on enabling NTK's and Sawants and Nikkita Olivers. Great work, team. Keep up the Stalinist illiberalism. See how that goes.'
Goodbye to homeless sweeps, can't come fast enough. Sweeping our homeless neighbors from one side of the street to the other, from one neighborhood to another. Homeless sweeps were never about solving the serious problems associated with homelessness, lifting up people in crisis... only inflicting pain. Oh how terrible it must be for #3 to have to witness a humane approach to treating fellow human beings.
Katie has never had a real job, dropped out of college, and ran a $200K budget for an activist group trying to get people to ride transit--violent criminals and drug addicts in stupors heeded her word.
By all merits and experience, Katie is not unqualified--she is woefully unqualified and inexperience.
Feeble-minded people struggle to put Katie's "happy talk" into context they can understand. But let me try for you: If you'd let an inexperienced 5-year-old fly a plane for Alaska Airlines, Katie is clearly your candidate.
@10 That was a three-way primary between Nickels, Sidran, and Schell. Sidran took 34% of the primary vote. That’s wildly different from being over 50%. My point was that once a candidate is over 50% of the primary vote, they are very hard to beat in the general.
Coolidge_dollar dear, I am not wary of a "commie" becoming mayor, because I am aware of what decade I exist in. Calling people communists is only for the weak-minded.
I am wary because I fear she is a one-trick pony. I think her cause is great and I support affordable housing. She apparently has a proven track record. But the city has a multi-billion dollar budget and 14,000 employees. Will she be able to administer that? Will she be able to work with the council? Does she understand the regulatory issues that come with operating two businesses (the utilities, which are the city's cash cows, and which are required to break even). Can she stand up to trump and the pigs that call themselves ICE Agents? (A concern I have about Harrell as well)
If she can do all that, fine. If she gets in there and it's just another housing boondoggle, with her and the council fighting each other, that's not fine, and we've set ourselves up yet again for a one-term failed administration.
@7 Yeah, all the homeless people are just sitting there watching the mayoral race on their giant flatscreen tvs and computer screens with their tents at the ready... licking their chops for that sweet sweet Belltown concrete. There's totally never been a homeless problem in Belltown until just right now!

@9 -- Great question and I can't think of any. The fact that Harrell is the incumbent makes it even less likely he will win. What is a lot more common is vote splitting, which was the point made by @2. But that clearly doesn't apply here (Wilson took over 50% of the vote).
The criticism of The Stranger's endorsements (way back when) just doesn't apply in this race, nor any other for that matter. I see no evidence for it. For example endorsing Evans in large part because she stands the best chance of beating Davison. Way to go editorial board! Finally, thinking strategically.
Harrell is mediocre but Katie Harrell as mayor? Stop the insanity! Katie runs an activist organization with one employee, herself. The city employees more than 10,000 people with complex issues and a budget of billions of dollars. Read Katie's platform on her website, it's basically Harrell bad, me good. She says she will seek a $1 billion bond for housing, will "streamline," will do this and that. Katie is basically a new Peter Steinbrueck, a voice for big spending, saying yes to all interest groups, but she has no credible plans and no experience to provide confidence she can do the job. She means well. That's nice. But this isn't grade school soccer, people. It's a big city with real challenges. Ask her how she will lower the price after supporting higher wages and other costs for pizza makers. It just doesn't pencil out, people!

Say goodbye to homeless sweeps if this horrible person becomes mayor.

Homeless sweeps were never about solving the serious problems associated with homelessness, lifting up people in crisis... only inflicting pain. 4: No, sweeps enable trash to be picked up, meth labs to be destroyed, vegetation to heal, people to be forced to get help. Repeat as necessary.
Oh how terrible it must be for #4 to have to witness a humane approach to treating fellow human beings.
4: And sweeps find dead bodies. So what's so wrong with that jmath? As Martha would say, it's a good thing.
I'm already seeing homeless encampments spring up in Belltown in anticipation of the 'progressive wins.' Downtown getting ready for the meltdown.

@2 Do you have any examples of a candidate going from over 50% in a top two primary to losing the general, or is that just wishful thinking?
9: There's at least one. Back in 2001 Mark Sidran won the primary over Nickles but Nickles won the general.
And Nickels was by far the more liberal candidate.
While I remain wary of Wilson, some of these comments are beyond ridiculous.
Calm down.

12: Let's hope more voters come to their senses.

Seattle liberals and "progressives" are so fucking stupidly naive (especially the white ones) LOL

Phil_in_Seattle dear, her platform is so stale that you need to toast it to make any of it digestible.
More car free zones, "reformed" property taxes, and that old favorite: 4000 new housing units in four years.
For a town with so many smart people, we sure fall for the same old stupid tropes.
