When George Rodriguez graduated from art school a few years ago, he didn’t show delicate photographs or a conceptual project with a statement of explanation—he put a giant, full-color ceramic mariachi band in the gallery. For his first solo at Foster White, he’s presenting Georges. They’re larger-than-life ceramic heads: George Jetson, Boy George, George W. Bush, George Ohr (legendary folk ceramicist). Elaborate Georges—saints, selves—have been emerging from his studio for months, for unveiling at tonight’s First Thursday Art Walk opening. Rodriguez’s heads are funk, maybe post-pop, Koons-lite. Or just call them Georges. (Foster White Gallery, 220 Third Ave S #100, 622-2833, 10 am–6 pm, free)
