There are several layers of good in Stroke of Genius: One, it’s a slide show at dusk in the gardens of the James and Janie Washington Cultural Center—the powerful-juju-full Central District house and studio of the late artist/fighter-for-civil-rights James Washington. If you’ve never been there, you must go. Two, the slide show is by three of Seattle’s most interesting artists: Genius Award finalists Sarah Bergmann, Amanda Manitach, and Dan Webb. The artists will talk (with me) about what they make, their deepest desires, and their greatest creative fears. Three, the entire thing is a fundraiser whose proceeds go directly to the $5,000 Genius Award itself, which one of these local artists will win in September. Four, there’s specially made Genius Juice wine by Sparkman Cellars for sale—again, all proceeds go to Genius. Get good, smart, drunken feelings all night long.
