Stranger Genius of literature Jim Woodring is best known for his wordless, surreal Frank comics, but he’s dabbled in word balloons, too. His new book Jim collects some of his best early work. These are best described as dreamy autobiographical comics, so long as you’re willing to accept, say, Woodring’s body transforming into a giant, swollen left hand or an account of wandering around a haunted ancient temple in search of popcorn as autobiography. Woodring has become our preeminent explorer of the subconscious, and Jim is the story of how he got that way. He’s pretty magical in person, too; meet him tonight.
