If you walk through Volunteer Park on any given cloudless evening, you might find a small crowd of people looking through the biggest telescopes you’ve seen outside an observatory. The group is so informal, it doesn’t even have a name, but they’re astronomy enthusiasts—some with advanced degrees—who love nothing better than to answer questions about the stars, moons, nebulae, and other heavenly bodies to passersby. Your first lesson will come when peek through one of the powerful telescopes and say: “Wow, those stars/moons/comets are moving fast!” “No,” someone will gently and invariably correct you. “We are moving fast.” (Volunteer Park, 1247 15th Ave E, various evenings depending on conditions, e-mail noahanderson@yahoo.com to get on the list)
