Tacita Dean's been called "the great poet of art film." It's rare we get to see what she's done; she lives in Berlin (and is from England). But now comes a local connection: Merce Cunningham, the dance legend who once attended Cornish College of the Arts. Craneway Event is the film that Dean shot during rehearsals of Merce Cunningham's last project. He watches from his wheelchair while dancers glide around inside a former Ford assembly plant overlooking San Francisco Bay. Ships roll by behind the dancers as if sharing the floor. While Dean was in a studio somewhere, editing this dream, Cunningham died. It's a memorial and a movie. (Seattle Art Museum, 1300 First Ave, 654-3100, 7 pm, free but registration required by Nov 4)
