John Bankston's art is a fantasy world full of color sitting loosely within thick black lines—like an adult coloring book. There are ongoing characters, like Mr. M, a black pirate once "captured" by the leather-clad Mr. L; Mr. M appears here in Seattle as a dignified yet adorable painted ceramic sculpture. The characters play out secret stories about race, gender, and S&M; they sit in idyllic spots and contemplate the African sculptures in their hands. It's about time this San Francisco artist showed in Seattle. He was "discovered" by the Studio Museum of Harlem back in the early '00s, and Seattle artist Jeffry Mitchell is his spiritual brother.
