Some folks hate it when brains get in their gore: Splice is the kind of horror film that pisses off hardcore horror fanatics, because it has, you know, a well-told story that strays from the standard horror conventions. But don't listen to them. Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody are ideal leads: At first, they're charming, sexy young nerds in love, but as they begin to venture into taboo areas of genetic manipulation—creating a creepy, armless new life-form that is much more than the sum of its impressive special effects—it becomes impossible to discern who the real monster is.
