One night, as he was leaving a bar, Mark Hogancamp was beaten into a coma. When he came to, he wasn't the same man. He started building an elaborate fictional village named Marwencol, named G.I. Joe dolls after his friends, and set about creating an intricate, World War II–era soap opera about them. Hogancamp took photos of the scenes, and the art world began to take notice of his work. Marwencol tells his story with compassion, charm, and an awareness of how weird it all is. This is the best documentary at SIFF this year.
